It's just a standard 98 Mauser with a modified magazine.

Normal Mausers have a five round internal magazine. This one has been modified to hold more rounds.

It may even be a detachable magazine but I doubt it.

This people look like People's Militia (Narodnoe Opolchenie) or partisans. Opolchenie could be armed with almost any weapon, including some stuff left from WWI, even captured enemy weapons. You see, the guy at the right with a strange rifle has a red band on his non-uniform cap, like Red Guards in Civil War.

When my Father was a cadet in 1943-44 they were armed with Arisaka 6.5mm rifles left from WWI shipments. He said this rifles didn't have blue, and to keep them from rust they had to polish and clean them almost all the time.

It's a mauser with a WWI trench magazine which held 20rds.

I have found a discussion about this picture at Russian military-historical forum. People didn't come to any conclusion, the magazine looks like it's from Czech ZB-26 machinegun.

Maybe it's some partizan craftsmanship, they liked to make different things like that. Or - maybe it's a Polish or Czech G98 with their own trench magazine.

As for a book - it's my Father who definetly needs to write memoirs, I am trying to persuade him for many years...

The short butt, the pistol grip (not straight stock), the straight bolt handle, the odd shaped cocking piece and what looks like a locking lug at the back of the bolt all seem to say FN large ring type mauser. There's a guy behind him with what looks like the same rife in plan bottom view.

Regardless, I have no idea what it really is.. but forced to guess; with that stock, I'd guess polish or latvian capture FN/mauser.
