I use the 2 x 250 kg bombs on the IL2 plus the cannon.

If you set your convergences appropriately you can use the MG hit sprites to guide your shot into the GV before then fire cannon.

As ghi I will try for a 45 degree AOA sweeping the mg to the target then loose off the cannon.......at about 600 .....  I am not accurate enough to pick off one part of the gv over another......... I am quite happy to hit the darn thing.

If I load rockets I come in much shallower and manually salvo them...... pretty rare I get much from them ....... shallow approach leaves you open to return pintle fire.

Whilst bombs will kill a Gv the general object is to cripple it

Would love too Brooke, but need to know some more info on it.  What time will it be in the states and what day will it fall on in the week?  I am still in Italy for another 7-8 months so I am 6 hours ahead of Eastern time in the states...  If it is on a Friday/Saturday I think I could do it as I am up til 4-5 AM flying anyways... And since I have a decent internet connection I would like to find something to do in the Special Events and such as I have not had a chance for a while... let me know, or anyone else with info can let me know....  Oh, and I will take an IL-2 with a nice glass of vodka! :D

I've fired a rocket so close that it bounced up and in front of my plane with the gray smoke still following it up. I know they can bounce, but it's very rare. HVARs are MUCH more prone to bouncing, being HE rockets.

EDIT: This was off a Tiger; I don't think I've ever tipped one off a Panzer before.

Regarding US Rockets.

At the last con, you recall that the evil con mission was flying PT boats.

Well I was getting pretty good with them, and I took the flying PTs into whatever the nearest tank battle was.

I got the PT to within 50 of various tanks (mostly tigers) and let those rockets fly. EVERY one of them bounced off harmlessly from all angles of attack on the tigers. Most bounced off other tanks, but some occasionally caused damage.

A data point...

you're very rarely going to kill one outright with any planes guns.

GMC31st and myself can pop your turret in one pass. yes you can take out a panzer turret from the top of them. if you come in on thier six and light them up with your cannons start a 800 you can pop thier turrets in one pass. any closer all you will do is take out turret or engine. takes some practice but you will get the hang of it

I use 6x100 lbs bombs, 4x rockets, and strafing to kill tanks.

I have no fantasies about the accuracy of my ord lobbing skills, so I use my own method low-alt level bombing: set salvo to 1, line up with the panzer at about 1~1.5k alt AGL, medium speed. Approach level and when distance counter turns to 1.0, get ready to drop bombs. As soon as distance changes to 800 and the enemy tank starts to disappear under the nose, quickly tap the bomb drop button 6 times in rythmical interval. (Of course, you must change the ord selection once, since you are dropping two external bombs, and four internal bay bombs). By dropping it this way the bombs will fall in a straight line with each bomb crater adjacent to the other - a bomb blast pattern of a long rectangle forms. Usually with this method I can kill an enemy tank close to the base within 2 minutes of take-off, without having to grab altitude for angular bombing.

Then I use the rockets - but I admit my hit rates are very low. So rockets are usually used to damage Ostwinds.

And, after that, with the guns I can strafe and damage about three~four enemy tanks. If I want more than just damaging it, I can blow up Panzers in one pass. I approach behind a tank from far out, go in at at a low angle under 30 degrees in most cases. Then I reduce throttle, zoom in max and, and fine tune the plane by quickly trimming it exactly right so it is stable.

And when the distance comes within 600yards, I open fire. Hold the cannon button down until my IL-2 almost collides with the Panzer. My target is; the rear hull, or turret rear, or the turret/hull joining area. As I fire the cannons I can see the globs of hit sprites smashing against the tank, and then finally the globs grouping into one - indicating the rounds from both guns are landing at right convergence. With a little bit of luck, as the distance closes down to 200 yards and less the Panzer will blow up. If it does not it is at least seriously damaged.

Therefore, IMO, the IL-2 guns are powerful, about exactly good as I would expect a true anti-tank aircraft gun would perform.

Yep, get low and hit from the side or back (at close range).  Most times you will only need 1 pass.  Tigers can also diein 1 pass if from behind and at 90 degrees

Yep, maybe is too powerful for the 23mm, and it has about same muzzle velocity like hispanos, i know russians used 37mm cannons , AT on IL2s against panzers
Last evening  I disabled/tracked 2 tigers in 1 sortie with cannos only, the ord was down, concentrate connon fire on the same track 2-3 pasess was done

Yes, but I don't think that was the IL-2 Type 3 we have.
