Toronto police horse killed in hit and run

Saturday, February 25, 2006

A horse with the Toronto police mounted unit was killed in a hit- and-run accident last night.

The collision happened at 6:55 p.m. when an officer and his mount, nine-year-old Brigadier, tried to pull over a black 1994 Nissan Quest on Lawrence Avenue between Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue.

Shortly after the vehicle was stopped, the driver sped away suddenly, knocking the horse and officer over.

"The officer and his mount were both left laying on the roadway," Staff Sergeant David Simpkins said.

The officer was taken to hospital with a broken rib. But Brigadier suffered injuries so serious he had to be put down at the scene.

"Every officer involved in this incident mourns the loss of that animal and I think the entire city of Toronto will be touched by the loss of this animal, as well," Police Chief Bill Blair told Citytv.

The suspect's vehicle was discovered abandoned in the Orton Park Road and Lawrence Avenue area shortly after the crash. The driver is still at large.

They have now caught this guy...he ran from police in his car, made a U-turn and drove into the horse...seeing the film of this on the six o'clock news was pretty disturbing...

There was a scumbag bank robber here who shot a K-9 dog when it tree'd him in the woods. The dog was killed instantly. About 5 minutes later, a police sniper spotted the scumbag in the woods. Five seconds after that, the scumbag caught a 168 grain Sierra MatchKing right between the eyes.

Oh, and the K-9 dog got a full honors funeral, including a procession that went through the city.

Works for me.

Police cars can't use the sidewalk......

But I actually hate Cops on horses.  They are usually bigger tulips then the ones they are sitting on.

this is an updated and more detailed account of what happened, including names etc...

It was a heartbreaking act of mercy that will likely never escape the memories of those involved.

After a mounted police officer and his horse were knocked down in an alleged hit and run Friday night, officers were forced to shoot the animal, which was enduring excruciating pain.

The tragic incident took place at Lawrence and Kingston Road just before 7pm.

The officer suffered neck, back and rib injuries and he has since been released from hospital, but he is very troubled over the loss of his partner, a horse with five years service named Brigadier.

Emotions ran high at the scene and people who saw the incident were deeply shaken.

“There was a lot of commotion around the horse and the officers I guess did as much as they could. And then we all heard two loud gunshots,” witness Jane Evans explained as she tried to hold back tears.

The death of the majestic creature shook even veteran officers. The last time a horse had to be put down was four years ago.

“These horses mean a lot to us,” said Staff Insp. Bill Wardle. “No one would be in the Mounted Unit if they didn't like horses and it was difficult.”

Chief Bill Blair was quick to respond to the tragedy.

“This is a devastating incident for the officers involved and for all of our officers. We lost an important partner tonight,” he said.

“The officers of the Mounted Unit that had to experience this and make the very difficult decision to end this animal's suffering, they were devastated by the loss.”

Witnesses said the horse and the officer were crossing from the south side of Lawrence to the north side when they were struck by a van going westbound.

The pair was patrolling with another mounted officer when someone told them about a man using a drive-through ATM who was cursing at the person in front of him.

The mounted officers approached and asked the man to pull over, but the driver apparently sped away instead. The officers rode away and that’s when the motorist allegedly made a U-turn on Lawrence and aimed his vehicle at the horse and officer.

Police claim the hit was intentional and the suspect accelerated toward the victims.

Investigators located an abandoned vehicle, a dark coloured minivan, in the Orton Park and Lawrence area and allegedly found horsehair embedded in the shattered window. After finding the van, investigators arrested a suspect at his home.

Only dangerous driving?  If the article is true, he attempted to MURDER the horse and the police officer.

That is if the article is true, it might not be...

In america, a police animal is just as much of a COP as a Human police man is.  Trying to kill a k9 unit is just the same as attempted murder.

Please post one example of someone being charged and/or convicted of murder or attempted murder as the result of killing a police animal. Most jurisdiction have specific laws that deal with the deliberate killing of police animals and none that I know of are the equivalent to the murder of a human being, cop or otherwise...

Why shouldn't the dog rate as high as the human officer? The dog should damned sure rate higher than some scumbag thug. As the example in my post upthread shows, around here shooting a K-9 dog around here earns you a bullet, and rightly so. The dogs around here are getting level 3 body armor.
