I can see a compromise here:
- Single buffs are free
- Formations of 2, 3, or 4 cost perks - not a linear progression, either, spend wisely for a 4-ship flight
- Human gunners work as they do now
- If there is no human gunner, then Otto's semi-retarded half-brother / half-trout / half-barstool - "Awful" - takes over the gunning duties. In which case you won't get the laser precision and quick reactions of a human player. But a likewise idiotic attack on the formation (dead-6) would yield expectedly bad results.
This would:
- Let people who wanna fly buffs as, like, level bombers, continue to do so with representative defensive fire if no gunners volunteer - flying tight formation gets more important w/o human gunners
- Make loading a human gunner a smart thing to do, and even make it an individually scorable skill
- Reduce the frequency of the moronic jerkwads with their NOE Lanc formation attacks
- Reduce the use of bomber formations as flak platforms ... sorry 999900
- Increase the use of tactical bombers like the A20G and Sturmovik for tactical missions (as opposed to splooging over in a flight if '24's on the deck and missing anyway ...)
All of which is wildly off-topic, of course.
