Never have enough thrust
« on: March 22, 2006, 03:53:09 PM »
I have been playing for several weeks now.  One thing I have noticed is that I never have enough thrust.  Of course this is a problem when trying to maintain altitude and engage in a dogfight.  I notice that same plane types are always pulling away from me and even though I may be in a faster plane, slwer planes overtake me and shoot me down pretty easy because I am always at stall speed.  I'm using a Saitek yoke/throttle/pedal combo.  I've calibrated multiple times.  What kind of number should I see on my RPM gauge?  This may help to find out if I have something wrong.  Thanks

While inflight, bring up clipboard and click on E6B.
The expanding card shows you RPM and pressure data for various power levels, for example full military and WEP.
Give full throttle, engage WEP (press P) and look if your cockpit gauges show the expected values.

Easiest way to find out if youre going full throttle is:

Grab a plane that has WEP (War Emergency Power) - P51 or SpitfireMk16, roll it. Got to "full power". Then press P key. If that gives you extra power, youre going full throttle.
If for some reason (stick setting/calibration/whatever) youre not going full boost, you wont be able to engage WEP).

If you want to check your MP/rpm settings, open the E6B on your clipboard for detailed information about engine settings, fuel, speed.

"The other planes are always faster in a fight" - maybe this thread can help you answer that question.

If you have any more trouble/questions - always feel free to ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question - only a stupid answer.

Check your trim.

If you are not in trim then you are sliding through the air and creating drag.

Also, it could the way you fly. If you are constantly climbing and turning you are always going to be slow. You'll need to manage your maneuvers better and find the time to fly straight and level for a while to build up your speed.

Wow.  Thanks for the quick replies guys.  I'll give all that a try.  Right now I am trying to fix my sound system so I can talk (no mic)  It's not as much fun when you can't talk to anyone.

There are a few axioms which hold true both in RL and in this game.  Here's one that applies to you.

Speed is life. Speed give you all kinds of options;
You might run away(bug out). You might extend to get some turning room (angles).
You might get real fast to chase down a faster plane and shoot it down.
Didn't that happen to you? You think you're in a faster plane but you get run down by some normally slow plane and he flames you?

There are all kinda of options when you have speed.

One thing you need to look at is flight is in 3 dimensions. If you come to a red light in your Corvette and some guy pulls up beside you in his 1965 VW bug and wants to race you it's pretty obvious that your vette will clean his clock in a race. And rightfully so. You're both on the road. You have a few 100 more horses under your hood. Planes are a little different as they operate with nothing around them but the thin air they're flying in.

Now use the same example of 2 planes flying side by side. One is an ME262 Jet and the other is a Spitfire Mk9. If you had them race in level flight from start to finish over a 5 miles course the Jet will pull away and win.

Now add the 3 dimensions of space they fly in. Since the prop is already pulling the plane through the air if you have altitude and point the nose down the prop will continue to pull the aircraft forward (down) and gravity will give you an assist. In doing so you might come close to doubling the actual speed a plane will normally fly in level flight. The reason I say "might come close" is because all planes have some aeronautical speed limit they can fly before coming apart at the seams. It doesn't take too long to exceed many planes structural limits.

So, let's take a closer look at the Jet and the Spitfire. If the jet was flying straight and level at say, 370 mph and a high spit dove in on him, unnoticed, the Spitfire may end up closing on the Jet going 60 mph faster than the Jet without much trouble.

You can test any of this with any plane. Take any plane up to 10,000 ft then dive it straight down. Note the speed where it become uncontrollable.  Then see fast you can go in the dive and still control it easily.  You will find out it's alot faster than the normal speeds your flying while straight and level.

THerer's much more to it so I'd suggest you visit the Training Arena (TA) and get with any of the Trainers. They'd be happy to help you, "get fast".

yea u may be just burning all of your E (Speed) and not coming in with enough E to begin with. That was my problem when i started also not only Speed is life  altitude is life make it a hsbit to climb to at least 10k so u can come in with a lot of E like me tehehe:lol  no im not a rook astronaut.

go to the training arena, ask for a trainer.you're experiencing the same problems everyone did when they started.the trainers are very helpful and it will ease the learning curve for you.
