Well, sort of getting into this.

You guys put on a real show with the B-2 and the F-16's. Liked it.

What bbugs me are all the damned pauses. Being a soccer fan, I am used to constant action. Now, sometimes there are several minutes where nothing happens. And I must wonder; do YOU guys know anything about all the tactics stuff?

I see a bunch of guys, I see the fakes etc, but I don't understand anything about the tactics.

I've gotten hold of punts, intercepts, blockings (that the right word?), scoring system, general rules and some minor tactical stuff (like when to punt  ). But the finer details allude me. Anyone with some knowledge wanna help me out?

All I'm going to say is that any game where the score is frequently 0-0 just SUCKS.    Sure, there are no pauses in Soccer, but they seem to keep running around aimlessly until somebody screws up or gets lucky.

Think of American Football as war.  Each "play" is a skirmish that requires planning and tactics on both sides, and then execution by the players.

And, before anybody brings it up, Canadian football sucks.  It's like pretend "real" football.    (Canadian football is just like American football but with a few rule differences.  The most important difference is that in Canadian football you only get 3 "downs" or plays instead of 4.  It sucks... play, play, punt; play, play, punt they end up punting too much IMHO.

two teams, 11 men on each team.
one offense (with ball)
one defense (without ball)
offense has four downs (plays) to move the ball ten yards for another 1st down.
offense tries to carry ball over goal line (touchdown = 6) then kicks extra point for a total of 7 points.
If offense doesn't get 1st down in 3 plays, they usually punt (kick) the ball to the other team on 4th down or they try to kick a field goal (3 points) if they are close enough, usually under 40 yards.
Different defense work better against different offenses and vice versa.
Some teams have better runners while others have better receivers and passers....

but football is over until next fall

Hehe a description of soccer as "constant action" is charitable at best

There is constant MOTION perhaps, (except when one of the sissy players does a nice WCW "flop" any time his body's "hit bubble" comes into contact with someone else's, initiating a new entry in the "Best Performance in a Penalty Drawing Role" competition) but in Ameri..er...the USA, we define "action" to involve points being scored, or blood being drawn, or flying helmets, or something more interesting than two guys bouncing a ball back and forth between their heads while the goalie tries to stay awake

In fact, in most cases, the actual 90 minutes of "action" can be dispensed with entirely, since the result is usually determined by two guys by THEMSELVES trying to kick more penalty kicks past two OTHER guys by THEMselves, while the other 18 guys who wasted the last 3 hours look on, with no further input on the outcome (as if they had any input to begin with).

Now, don't get me wrong.  It's a great game, and it's loads of fun to PLAY, and there's even a lot of strategy and tactics and huge amounts of skill involved.

But "action?"  Nope.  Sorry.  Unless of course, the US Women's team is playing...

The strategy with the playaction, fakes, etc is to force the defense to play conservative, and/or force them to cover the run so pass recievers can more easily get open.  This obviously works better if you can actually run the ball, if not they won't respect it and drop back in heavy pass coverage regardless (or if you have a crappy QB/recieving core, they'll only use single man coverage and stack everyone else against the run).

On the other side, defenses will try to confuse the offense by disguising their coverages.  Stack the line like they're bringing a lot of people on run coverage or blitz, only to have them drop back immediately into pass coverage.  Or have them back off the line as if in pass coverage only to rush the line at the last second blitzing the quarterback.

Like any other sport, once you get the general rules down you'll pick up on the strategies.  There are matchups all over the place, and plays that look like failures can be setting up successful options later.

Most of us have been watching and/or playing most of our lives, so yeah, the average American is going to have at least a general grasp on football strategy.

Jedi - as an individual from the true home of football, I must take issue with your comments.

Firstly, you don't appear to know much about penalty taking. In actual fact, both sides have five penalties each (or more if the result is a tie). That means at least 6 players on each side are involved.

Secondly, penalties only decide important games, like tournament play-offs or cup ties.

I've seen American 'soccer' league action on TV and frankly it's a bit crap.

On the other hand, I've been going to football matches over here since I was very small, and I've seen some great games. Really great games. All of the England tournament games in recent years have been excellent (apart from the disastrous Euro 2000). What true Englishman does not remember Owen's goal against Argentina in World Cup '98? Or England's complete 4-1 destruction of Holland in 1996?

There are bad games, but isn't that true of any sport?

Football is a great game to play - you don't need expensive equipment or even a pitch. You have to fit, not just strong and there's plenty of oppounity for argy-bargy.

American football? Even cricket is more entertaining...

Any 250lbs piece of muscles can be a good american football player. Take the ball and run (Run Forrest!! RUN!!!  )

Only a skillfull and/or intelligent player can be a soccer star.

I think the difference between both games is well marked

Soccer is great.  I was really stoked in 1992 when we could FINALLY watch the World Cup in the US.

Santa, yes there are a lot of pauses.  I guess you get used to it.  I played the game at a very low level and even then there was so much to think about between plays, so the pauses didn't seem too short.

If you have tactics questions, go ahead and ask - I know for sure there are some big fans on this BBS.

Jihad - NFL scripted LOL!  Take your meds.

That was in 1994   ...Hehehe I will never forget Hristo Stoichkov's Bulgaria kicking Germany's prettythang, and how did he lead his teams' reaction with that free kick goal from 30meters.

And no, I will never forget Spanish' elimination in Boston...

I hate italians since that day

RAM your statement only shows your complete ignorance of the game.  At 350 lbs it is arguably a true statement, but trust me, there are plenty of 250 lb guys who are great athletes who could never play in the NFL.

And yes it was 94 and yes I remember Stoichkov's goal.  To quote Andres Cantor:  <Explitive Deleted>

Funked, learn some spanish and then listen to the argentinian and/or Columbian TV and radio people doing the narration of the matches of their national teams, or their "classic" matches...

I remember one...spanish people will remeber it because it was a NO goal..."El gol de Abreu"

(sorry its inexplicable for non-spanish speaking guys)

Well so much as ignorance...I've seen some matches, (Including the last 2 superbowls). The thing I've most liked from the matches I've seen has been, in this order:

-Britney Spears
-Jennifer Lopez

Hehehe...Yes I think I dont like the game too much

OK RAM but only if you listen to Bill King calling the "Holy Roller" or "The Immaculate Reception".

Since you saw two games I will remove the "completely" so you are now just ignorant.
