I can remember decades ago when Reagan offered amnesty and he did it right up front with no spin whatsoever.

I suspect that most (if not all) of those people that we're forgiven their trespasses became taxpayers.

I know of a group of ten that my Dad helped with transportation and with the paper work, etc. to get their citizenship when this was offered.
One of them, a very close friend of mine, brought his wife from Mexico and now has three kids. He has made a great life for himself and family here. A better guy you couldn`t ask for.
Out of the other nine, one was killed in a head on car crash in Dallas one Saturday night.
The other eight did just what they set out to do. They worked hard while here. They lived on pretty meager means, saved most of their money, then returned to their homeland where their families were and are pretty well set for life on their earnings from their time here.
One of these guys was amazing at turning a sow`s ear into a silk purse, so to speak. Most people he worked with couldn`t pronounce his name, so he became known as Bonito, which I always got a kick out of because he certainly was not. :)
He started by saving his money until he bought an older, really huge Colonial style, two story house. He converted this place into  compartment style rooms with a grand dining room for all. His wifed cooked and served the meals at an additional cost for those living there. With earnings from this he made some of the most unbelievable house and land deals I have ever witnessed. It was amazing. He refurbished, remodeled and sold some of these houses at some super profits. Others he rented out on a monthly basis. Within about a ten year period he had a pretty sizeable nest egg. He sold all of the properties at  some pretty above average profits, then returned to Mexico.
Democracy is two wolves deciding on what to eat. Freedom is a well armed sheep protesting the vote.

Yep... it would be good if all people had the opportunity to spend their working lives in a high income area of the planet and their retirement in a low income one.

I would not mind retiring in mexico except that they have a political system that sucks the big one.
