I am a terrible shot....need help!!!
« on: April 10, 2006, 07:23:57 PM »
I have flown flight sims for some time now, but, nothing as realistic in combat as
AH II.   I am struggling to make hits and kills.  I am aware that I have only been in here for little over two weeks.  However, I am afraid that I am developing bad habits that will be hard to break.

I am trainable and am just hoping that some one that might read this could set up some sort of a training session to at least give me some sort of framework to work in.  I do very very well if I know principles and knowing such will do my part to practice.

I am afraid that this is one of those two edged swords.  If it is too easy folks will get board and if it is too hard they will get discouraged and just go away.  I am obviously neither.  But, I don't want to become discouraged as I never realized that PC gaming could be so much fun.

Thank you for reading this and whom ever decides to help.

:O :O

I am quite familiar with the time difference between our two countries and would not want to be of too much inconvenience to you or your family.  I have been a radio ham for over 25 years now and just got back from my first visit to your wonderful country last Nov. 2005.  My entire stay was with my ham friends down on the southeast coast in East Sussex outside of Hastings and up in the Midlands in Staffordshire, Rugely and Handsacre/Armitage.  Yes the very town where they have the Armitage Shanks toilet factory.........LOL.

I spent 2 weeks down in East Sussex and one week up in the Midlands.  I shot over 7 gigs worth of pics with my new Olympus E-300 and have various pics as wall paper on all my networked machines...........  Man you live in one gorgeous place.

Well, down to the business at hand.  First off, thanks for your expedient and kind offer of assistance.  I have already introduced two more of my friends to this game so they will be even "ranker/rancor" beginners than me........LOL..(sorry about the play on words).  I have read most of the pertinent articles here on the forum and even watched the really cool video on this subject.  However, watching and doing are two distinctly different issues.

I have decent eye hand coordination as I have been a dentist for over 25 years as well.  Unfortunately, I had to retire due to medical reasons..... a severe spinal condition......Congenital Spinal Stenosis.  Had back surgery and am doing much better now.  Just think without all this time would not have had the manner or means for this game.

Therefore, I can be and will be delighted to be at your convenient disposal for the proper tutiledge on aiming my plane's guns.  I get up fairly early here, about 5-6 am that puts things around 11-12 pm for you.  I can be available anytime during the day or evening, however, I also realize that lunch time for us is right at tea time for you.

Please just let me know some times and how to contact you.  I might be coming back across later this summer or early fall.  With a bit of luck the couple down in Hastings will be coming over next April to visit the states for the first time.

Tara for now,

P.S.  I love Marmite..........even went to the factory in Burton on Trent....

Howdie KD and welcome to your new addiction :D

One thing I have found that helps me alot....turn off your tracers....most folks when they shoot try to "walk" their shots to the target.

Also try using a single type of weapon....meaning use planes that just one type of weapon....like the hurricane mk2c or most of the US planes...also if you do fly a mixed weapon plane...only shoot with your hardest hitting weapon.  Get used to this weapon, fly for a bit with tracers on to get the feel for the flight path/time of the round.

Next to fit in on this BBS you need to mess up your sentence structure abit, maybe throw in a few miss-spelled words :D

Look for me in the MA anytime, I'll be glad to help :)

:D

Yeah, zorstorer pretty much covered things.  Turning off tracers is a must, though I'd leave 'em on for a few weeks just to get a feel if you're just starting out.  I usually turn them on when I'm taking a plane w/ 30mm cannon, too, but only because I can't hit anything for beans without them.

Another thing you might try is just going offline and shooting the drones for practice.  Also, you could grab a bud and head into the TA and just shoot the heck out of each other - you won't actually blow up the other guy but you'll still be able to tell when you hit them.  Either method works, the former's a little boring, but sometimes I do it when I'm disgusted with my aim.

Hello KD :)!

Whats your ingame ID? If you see me online, dont hesitate asking me for some time in the TA. 90% of the time, ill be willing to drop what im doing and go with you :). Unfortunatly, im EU time zone also.

If you have trouble shooting, skim through the first page of this forum, there have been a few threads on that topic lately, with lots of good replys. If you are interested in some more reading about basic flight maneuvering, Air Combat tactics etc, i recommend you take a look at http://www.netaces.org, if you havent done so already.

Last but not least, for "professional" help contact thge trainers at trainers@hitechcreations.com, tell them what you want/need and when you are online. One of them will get back with you.

Good luck and Welcome, too :).

KD, there is a lead computing site avalible in offline mode, and in the training arena.  To activate it, simply look at the target plane and press the TAB key.  If there is more than one plane in view, you can continue to press the TAB key, and cycle through until the plane you want to select is hilighted.  A green site will then appear showing the amount of lead you need to allow to hit the target.  Some practice with this will give you an idea on where you need to aim.

Since you are fairly new, I would suggest leaving tracers on.  Until you become used to the ballistics model in AH, they will be handy in showing how far you are missing by, and what adjustments you need to make.

Unless you are in a position where you have a sure shot, fire short burst, note where your shots went, adjust your lead, and try again.  Do not spray wildly, or walk your bullets to the target.  What you are trying to accomplish is building yourself a mental library of sucessful "site pictures" so that you will know how far to lead, and when to pull the trigger under varying situations.  The drawback to throwing a long burst of lead out hoping to hit something, is that when you do actually manage to get a few hits, you will have no idea what the correct site picture looked like when those particular rounds were fired.

It will take time to gain an eye for gunnery, but some offline or TA practice sessions, will likely give you a jump start on building that library of site pictures.

I really appreciate all the kind offers and suggestions.  However, this last one with the TAB key.  That sounded like the ticket that I needed, but, it highligts the target, but, NO GREEN SITE.  Went into the keyboard options and could find nothing.

By the way, my "WORDSMITHING" is just an additional affliction I have.  Sorry....  Tell you all what.........  I'll get sloppy with my writting if you can get me ON TARGET..........  DEAL???????????????  or what..............

Offline you do have to change 1 arena setting under 'FlightModeFlags' in arena settings and turn on Lead Computed Gunsight.
I believe its through setup > arena settings > environment > arena settings > flightmodeflags
Check the box next to Lead Computed Gunsight and it's enabled.
For enemy/red icons you just need to hit tab or shift-tab and for friendlies/green icons you need to hit 'Ctrl-tab' to enable Friendly Lock and then the tab or shift-tab.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Ah you don't have to work on it.  It'll just come to you.  If I spend a week or two in England I start saying stuff like "class" until I smack myself.  A few more weeks with us, and you'll be talking moron just fine. :D :aok
