What movie would you like to see remade?
« on: April 15, 2006, 02:20:40 PM »
So many movies have been re-made lately, it's hard to keep track.  King Kong, Flight of the Phoenix and now the Posidon Adventure,  Some are good, some suck.  I recently saw the original Howard Hughes production of Wings ( the first movie to win an academy award)  Holy Shi#,  the air combat in that movie was spectacular, if you havent seen it i suggest you find a copy.

It certainly suffers at times for being a silent film; dialogues have to be displayed on the screen, and this happens quite often because the story here is sometimes quite complex. Not only do the characters talk a lot, but the story also often requires some explaining, and some of the explanations can be quite long.

The action sequences are not as "big" as in they would be in movies today, but they are a lot more impressive in their own way. I was just amazed at how they could have shot some of those sequences; I got the impression that the person who was shooting was probably in quite a lot of danger, because I knew that they could not have used special effects in 1927; what I was seeing was the real thing. It was quite exhilirating to see those old, unsafe, WW1 planes in the air. I do not think that any director today would be crazy enough to duplicate something like this with real planes, so this is probably the only chance anyone has to see these planes in action, and feel like you're right in the thick of a dogfight.

'Teddy Ruxpin and the treasures of Gondo' was a good one, wonder if the animators are still alive?

Maybe not a remake but I think a terminator movie (not having arnold in it) after judgement day happens would be cool.

A modern day Red Dawn would be neat as well.

These all depend on how well they are made.  I'm not one of those purist types who think remaking a movie or covering a song is blasphemy.

Aside from that Howard Hughes had the largest privatly owned air force in the world in 1927.  He might have had the largest period but I can't remember.

Today's Hollywood wouldn't even be fit to remake "Plan 9 From Outer Space".   The major studios currently suffer from the opposite of the Midas touch--everything they touch turns to crap.

I can't think of any really great movie that would be improved by the modern studios.  Maybe a few silent movies would fit the bill, but most of those that are worth remaking already have been.  A version of "Metropolis" that wasn't painfully boring and silly might be interesting.

EDIT:  A version of "Citizen Kane" that could actually hold my interest would also be nice.  I still haven't seen that movie all at once.  I can't bear to watch it for more than about 20 minutes at a time--it's just too crushingly dull.  It's one of exactly two movies that has actually put me to sleep, the other being the unimaginative and predictable"Gladiator".

Wings wasn't the Hughes movie... you're thinking of Hell's Angels.

I semi-agree ith JAB... remakes aren't usually better than the originals, so I guess the answer  would be to remake a terrible movie. :)

Moe... did you ever see the Great Waldo Pepper? (NOT a terrible movie)

You're in luck. They re-opened shooting to bring it up to an R rating, in response to "strong internet interest". So it's been remade before it's even released.
