"angus.. not sure you are getting the point. Are you saying that if we took away the handguns that our homicide rate would decrease by that amount?"

No. Wouldn't be too sure there. I am saying that if WE'D let them loose, OUR homicide rate would go up.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

angus... why would your homicide rate go up?  is there something evil about your country that is unlike any other?

If countrys that ban handguns don't see a significant reduction in homicide then why would the reverse be true?

Some of the most evil people on earth live in D.C.   the homicide rate is very high and they have very restrictive gun laws.... do you think that a reduction in these laws (more firearms) would make it even more homicidal?

you seem to have a very low opinion of your fellow man.   This seems to be a common thread amungst the gun banners... they all seem to beliefe that only certain elite humans are capable of making good decisions.

Lazs:
"angus... why would your homicide rate go up? is there something evil about your country that is unlike any other? "

Because there aren't any significant numbers of conceilable firearms, or firearms at all in the circulation. Try to grasp that. The gunlaw is and was strict, and the walls are mostly holding.
In your case, you have the whole country flooded with armament of all sorts, and bans and restrictions are firstly going to affect the honest citizens, and for a long while. And local bans don't do much, when the access is totally different in the next state.
State does not mean country you see, so just imagine how much harder it is to get a gun and ammo into a far-away island, than simply from the next state.
A friend of mine lived in Oklahoma. It didn't take him any scrutiny or anything to buy a .45. He's not even a US citizen. He was absolutely baffled about this, and I think he bought the gun in the beginning as a joke!
For us to get a license, you have to take a course, have a clean record, minimal age of course, exam, police interview, and then get two "clean" people to back you up. Then you can go shop, everything between .22 and 30-06 or so, and 12 gauge, even automatic up to 5 shots, and 5 shot pumpguns as well. But no automatic handguns.
We don't live in the world of armed felons, and don't want to.

Then answer this. Why is your homocide rate so much more, as well as rape and armed robbery, not to mention assault with a lethal weapon resulting in wounds. Is there anything evil about your country or could it be that crap like that is easier due to the fact that most people can be expected to be overarmed?

Angus, you live in the equivalent of a "gated community."

You're well isolated on a small island with a homogeneous population.

You've got a tiny little "old boy" network of a community with common mores and values.

I think that has far more to do with your homicide rate than the presence or lack of presence of guns.

I think that's your "secret to success".

We have guns. Lots of them!
Just not the ones you can slip into your pocket or purse.
And it's not just about homicide, but all sorts of crime.
And if you ask me, the odd barroom brawl is just as common here as anywhere else. ;)

Exactly.

You have a relatively tiny ~300,000 person population and only ~7% of those were born "off island". Heck, Louisville, Kentucky has a population the size of Iceland's.

Ancestry is common, societal mores are common; heck, with a population that small a large part of it is probably related somehow.

Again, your "secret to success" isn't the presence or lack of presence of handguns.

It's that your entire society is very small, of a common fabric, sharing common values and isolated on a small island.

Like I said, you're the equivalent of a "gated community" here; check the crime stats for our gated communities. They're very low. Very low.

Correction. Once guns are freely available, there's no way to keep them out of the hands of honest citizens. When they are not freely available, only the criminals have them.
