I saw an impromptu airshow, performed just for me and my pal in Groton (last summer?). Of course, I had no freakn camera when it happened, but was just amazing.
We're digging clams our at Bluff Point across from Groton Airport.. Another ho-hum morning. We hear the unmistakeable rumble of large, WWII type engines starting and run'ups. Hm?
We watch as 3 B-25's slowly lift off heading north, right in front of our eyes. Then, a silver P51 Mustang, takes off and catches them in seconds, we could here the 51 pull power to try and stay in formation with the bombers.
They went 'round & 'round the airport in close formation, RIGHT OVER OUR HEADS. (practicing? I guess?).. Finally going out of sight to the west low horizon.
We start digging clams again, amazed. Then we hear the engines coming again for one final pass. They're coming directly over Groton airport at about 500 AGL! In perfect carpet bombing wing to wing spread, P51 holding out in a finger-4 type position.. DIRECTLY AT MY PAL AND I STANDING KNEEDEEP IN THE BAY.
We dropped the clam rakes and my pal says;
"Jeezuz, what if them bay doors opened now and we saw bombs tumble out?" What a way to go out, I s'pose.. LOL.
Wow. Over they went, and we never saw them again.
Next day in the news I saw where they had the last living survivors of the Doolittle Raid somewhere in Mystic? It was a commeration flight of some sort. Never saw anythng like that in my life. Prolly never will again. No camera. :-(
