Haven't driven a BMW have ya funked?  Advice, do not! No matter what your income level, you will find a way to buy one, it handles like no other car I've driven (which includes 911's and a 944)...WRX? ain't that a front wheel drive car? Get outta here!  ;)

Actually, it happened by mistake...a friend over a year ago dropped off a 1992 525 at my house and used my truck for the week-end, the first day I drove this auto, it was like quality slapped me in the face, the way it hugged the road, the way the doors closed, the way it shifted...then I decided "Okay, maybe, just maybe they don't buy these for status symbols..."

Then the second day of driving it, while still admiring the handling, I looked down at the odometer (thinking this car had low milege) and it showed 198,500 miles...I was sold and started saving...

Dunno Rip - the only car I can even think of to replace my '92 Prelude is 330 Convertible but it's just a tad beyond the means now.

My girlfriend drives Z3 and is bugging me to replace the car but I just can't find another perfect blend of driveability (BMW road hugging? you should try cornering with 4 wheel steering  ;)) comfort and all the gadgets in the right place. 127K on the clock and my driving (just under 100 wherever possible and g/f not in the car  ;)) and zero oil consumption + 32mpg... 15 feet of Japaneese finest engineering. My Big Beautiful Doll  :)

p.s. I actually don't fancy Z3's handling - they've got it wrong in the steering ratios (IMHO) - the front wheels are somewhere far ahead and steering is very twitchy - very small movement of the steering wheel produce very small effect and another inch or so and you're cornering on two wheels... But it does sound beautifully and feels very solid  :)

Honda= front wheel drive
BMW=Rear wheel drive

You don't see too many circuit races with RWD cars...maybe Honda will wake up one day and realize that there's a market out there for RWD sports cars, Lexus has..and Audi is coming around too.

She got a 2000 Z3?  They dumbed down the steering (soft steering) in that year..

I might add that I never test drove a Z3, wasn't interested since no back seat, but, I've heard they drive quite a bit different than  the sister 300 series, someone compared its steering to a very fast go-cart. Dunno if thats good or bad..Hajo owns one though.

Ripsnort - if Funked means the Subaru Impreza WRX, then it blows the stuffing out of your old-fashioned, stuck-in-the-mud, old man about town, long in the tooth BMW crap.  :p It's also four wheel drive, not FWD.

The standard British edition (Turbo 2000) is four wheel drive BTW, mainly because it has 280 BHP under the bonnet (err...sorry I mean 'hood'). And that's 280 BHP on a very light car.

The WRX is available as a grey import from Japan over here (same as the US I'm guessing).

You'll also find that many European sports saloon racing series involve cars that are solely FWD.

BTW, most Japanese sports saloons are four wheel drive - mainly because of the brute force.

Nissan Skyline GTR anyone?

Hell, most Japanese cars blow the hell outta their co-level competitors, such as 300 series in this case, just read this article, you'll know why HP doesn't hold much water in the car that has won Car of the Year award 9 of the last 10 years...it has nothing to do with HP.

Rip I'm sure they are nice cars.  Just a bit overpriced/overhyped.  So I like to make fun of them.   ;)

You have a good point about RWD.  FWD is better for most driving, but if you are trying to put down a lot of horsepower on a dry road, RWD has some dynamic advantages.  Also, FWD in a high-powered car means the outer halfshaft joints have to transmit torque while dealing with suspension motion and big steering angles, which tends to cause early failures if you drive harder than the "average" driver.

On the other hand, in Touring Car racing FWD Integras and Accords have been beating RWD 3-series BMWs for years.   ;)
