I set myself up for life the summer after 10th grade... Didn't have anything but a roadmap of stepping stones to my goals, but I knew exactly what I wanted and a pretty good idea of how to get there. I didn't give up even when faced with setbacks or when told I ought to set *different* goals, and sure enough I pretty much got what I wanted.

So getting your life straight in 10th grade doesn't seem all that strange to me. If you want to do anything extraordinary with your life, 10th grade is about the latest you ought to get your stuff together and start setting/achieving milestones that lead to your overall goal. It doesn't matter whether your goal is to be an astronaut or owning your own auto repair shop, 10th grade is about when you need to get started because everything you do from 10th grade on will either count in your favor or be held against you without mercy.

While you're young, take the opportunity to try working in any kind of job that even remotely interests you. Change as often as you need to.

You need to find out what you love, or at least like, doing. I never did figure it out...and still don't know...and all that gets you is endless days of dissatisfaction.

Do NOT start working 7 days a week for $7/hour. That kind of work is worth it when you have a clear goal, and sufficient reward. If retail was your chosen direction, then you'd be doing the right thing.

Finally...the rest of the guys are right...you're going to work for mouth-breathing bottom-feeders as often as you work for experienced professionals, and it truly sucks. Look at it this way...imagine having to put up with a supervisor who is clearly dumber than a bag of hammers...and he's 10 years younger than you are. Not fun.

Hard work is really good, if you like what you do. Make certain, more than anything else, that you can stand to put your feet on the floor each morning and yuo'll be OK.

My step dad owns his auto repair shop in 3 years so I have to learn how to keep from running it into the ground. If I could, i'd be working somewhere that had to do with cars. I'd be fine working at Big O Tires rotating and balancing tires for $7 an hour. It was fine for the first few months at Linens N Things but then it started to become a problem when there are 4 people closing the store and 2 of them want to screw around and talk while everyone else cleans. Do they get blamed? oh no, it's a team responsibility. Last summer I worked at my step dad's auto shop, every Friday the whole team cleaned the floors, none of the bullcrap stand around and let everyone else work.

Anyway, there's a little hobby store down the road that I am going to call up and see if they are hiring/what age they hire at and a music store too, but I think I might have to be 18 to work there but who knows. I may just thrown in my 2 week notice since school is out next Monday and the sooner i'm in the shop the more I have a chance to learn.

So i'm probably just being a whiny 16 year old but here's an example of the stupidity of my boss (probably the coroporate hot shots mostly) anyway, as you know I work at...Linens n Things. What do we sell? Crap, mostly.

We don't close until 10:00PM. That is, the doors don't get LOCKED until 10PM and that's if there are no customers, if there are customers, we stay later. Oh yes, because you just have to have that muffin pan or that comforter. Give me a frikken break. Anyone shopping at 9PM for pillows should be shot, and anyone in the store until 10PM shouldn't even be living. Good ything I only have 2 weeks left...

Ahhh the dolts that stick around after closing time. You're gonna find that anywhere you work. The whole time you're thinking "GO HOME" while they're smiling away enjoying the hit oldies playing on the radio. I remember working at a fast food joint and there would always be the bastards that come in at 8:55(9PM closing) and DINE IN . You practically had to shove them out the door when they left or risk someone else trying to come in.

My point is: Work is work...make the most of your time not working and if you have no time between working...find a new job, there are things you can do when you're young that you cant get away with later...and you'll regret that.

I got fired a week ago for working too hard. That'll teach me!

Anyway, **** always works out in the end. I originally went to the job for something different. Now I'm possibly going to work on a construction site or engineering office. Better money, harder work.

Plus I was just asked to crew on two olympic class sailboats. If we do well enough, we just might try to do the world championship in October. That would rock so much.

Like I said, good thing I only have 2 weeks left, my notice goes up tomorrow, then i'll be working for my step dad, where close is guaranteed by 6PM if not earlier.

But that's exactly what it is Rightfoot, only, we can't make that announcement, "The store is closing please bring your purchases to the front" for some reason, i've never gotten the whole shpeel about why not. I couldn't stay pay 10PM on school nights and school ends on Monday:(

Which also reminds me, don't forget to pick up your teen squelch emergency kit at your local retailers as it is that time of season again^^^

It could be worse.

They could keep moving your desk. Then the only thing you have to live for is your red stapler. Then you find out you were laid off 5 years ago but due to a payroll glitch, your still getting paid.
