I can see both sides of it. Being that I can't for several medical reasons, I can understand that it would suck for some people to be enlisted. As a few have pointed out, it definately wouldn't be a great thing to be fighting along side people whom either, A) Don't agree with the president or war at all. Or, B) don't want to go for any other reason.

I'm not sure what the number of active soldiers in any branch, but as long as they are able to do their job with the number they have then there should be no reason for the draft to be reinstated. Personally I don't think it would pass anyway, but i've been suprised before.

I'd still like to know if registration for the selective service is still going on for 18 year olds (males). If it is, there is nothing for anyone to pass, the draft is still around & just not being used.

I registered for selective service 7 years ago so I'd assume it's still going.

In fact. when faced with the choise of either going back home to the wife, or charging an enemy which has vastly superiour numbers.

You could always be a medic in the service if you didn't want to fight, that isn't to say you wouldn't fight at all of course.

I have an uncle who was a corpsman in WWII and participated in the Battle of Okinawa. While he might not have done much if any shootin' the courtesy was not returned.

If you don't want to do military service you can work for the Army Corps of Engineers. The Coast Guard. Border Patrol. Customs Service. FEMA. The Red Cross... The USO. The Civil Air Patrol.

Service to your state or nation can be done without being in the 'Military'.

Yes it is. My son. Who turns 18 on the 13th just registered last week.

Funny thing is he has the same name as me.
He asked me if he should put "Jr." on it.
I thought about it for a moment then said.

"Naaaa. If they call you up I'll just go" LMAO

Heinlein had a great idea, I wish it was possible to implement it. Being a citizen should be earned not granted just as an accident of birth.

Thanks Dred, then that means we still have a draft, so it's a moot point for the legislature to do anything concerning it unless they want to have women drafted or disolve the draft or otherwise change the framework of the draft we already have.

I wouldn't mind if a Scottish (it wasn't Heinlein who originated the idea) way of life was put up. If you serve, for a set period of time, you get to be a citizen.

The "Non-Military" option seems interesting, but it should be scaled way way back to make it NOT EQUAL to military service. Wanting to help the Red Cross is noble, however don't think for one second you are worth the spit of someone who is willing to die for his country.

So, 2 years all front line military career basics. More difficult careers would require more.

But lazy **** like the Red Cross? You have to give 20 years before you even begin to become a citizen.

Lasersailor, oh lasersailor. Most of the people in the army are NOT in combat positions. It takes five to seven support personel for every soldier in combat. So serving in the Red Cross should be equivalent to military service.
