What in hell is a World Cup?
« on: June 10, 2006, 01:55:48 AM »
And... do we have a chance in hell that the git of american soccer moms could beat a buncha uncivilized savages in a game of kick ball?

The world cup is kinda like the world series except for soccer instead of baseball......and the whole world does actually get to play.......and loads of teams compete in it rather than just 2........and it starts with groups of teams playing in mini leagues moving to a knockout competition based on one match rather than 25 in a row between the same 2 teams.

So.....er.....actually it's nothing like the world series at all.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this 'whole world' gets to play thing. The after game riots look like great fun though...

...and speaking of fun for the fans; who the hell let Canada into the NHL anyway? are they in the world cup? hey.. now that canada has terrorists, does that mean they can play?

LOL

I did enjoy the 1994 World Cup hosted by the USA though, and watched many games. The tournament had a sad ending though. Sad when the final of the world cup had to be decided by a penalty shootout. I'll never forget the look of devastation when Roberto Baggio missed his. Come back Chris Waddle - all is forgiven!

I was in Munich most of last week (left Friday)... a British reporter asked me if I thought soccer (he used a different word for it?) would become popular in the U.S. if the U.S. did well in the World Cup. I simply replied "We have a team in the World Cup?"

Honestly, no national pride.

;)

The US team is, at last, viewed as a top side.  Gone are the years of laughing at the Yanks for not knowing what on earth the offside rule is, etc.  Without checking, I think the USA is currently ranked 5th in the world and is expected to do pretty well this cup.

wouldnt go that far... :D

decent yes, top no!

they are a good team it seems, not one world class player amongst them though, sometimes you need that bit of magic to turn a game.

they have a young player coming through the ranks who is from ghana with american nationality called Freddy Adu, apparently he is going to be something special.  dont think he is in the squad yet though.

No - England and Scotland field separate teams. Also Northern Ireland.

Can't believe you said that - was it a troll? :o
