Dead man walking...

If I am understanding this correctly, he died while campaigning. Then afterwards, he won the election.

Voting for a dead guy.

This one goes to the book of "Stupid Laws Around The World".

That's beyond stupid. It's...BISHROOK!

Here, if ya die, yer outta politics. Yer party finds a replacement. And it ain't gonna be your wife, unless she's the best candidate.

Pretty easy solution. Sort of like "if you're dead, you ain't got a place as a forward in Barcelona. And if you held the place and died, your wife ain't getting it."

Hey, can I vote for Elvis?  .

Sheeesh  youse guys got no sense of history. So a dead man got elected to the Senate.  This is a great step forward. Think on how many years that "dead" people were showing up on the voting rolls. Now they have a real representative.

What's the difference? "Dead" or "Brain Dead", most politician are the latter.

That's the difference Dowding. We do not delay anything, nor do we hold a "special election".

The State Governor appoints a person to a term until the next general election. This person may or may not be the same party as the deceased or even the same as the Gov.

At the next general election (2 years)someone would have to compete for and win  party's nomination. The candidates then face the other party's candidate in the general.

Apparently you would cancel the election. An unspecified and unelected party official would select a candidate? Not the people that make up the membership of the party? You then hold a "special election" and proceed from there?

Like I said, you may think that makes more sense. Our system has worked a long time for us. This is just one of the few times a candidate died before the election.

No Toad, the party would have already selected a replacement candidate in the form of a second to the original nominee.

Dnil - seriously calling me 'Eurotrash' is simply pathetic and I won't dignify your comment with a response. Where did you learn such a big word?

Then again...

Envious of the States? I really don't think so, and in fact, I'd resist any further Americanisation of my country vociferously. That is why I feel I have more in common with continental Europeans than the average American. Having said that I don't have anything against most Americans, but you seem to be an exception.

Election of a dead candidate is far less embarrassing to this American than dead voters casting ballots in past elections.

Dnil - you started it with the Eurotrash comment. I wouldn't have said anything otherwise.

I agree with Jack.

I wonder how many long dead folks voted in this one. Some states don't even require a picture ID.

I'm uninformed as to how Oregon authenticates mail ballots. If they mail one out to a guy that dies before he fills it out and that guy's wife fills out his and hers, how would they know? How would they know if a guy SOLD his mail ballot to the local party boss and let the boss fill it out and mail it? I hope they have some protections/precautions.

Time to use a retinal scan or something in all states.

That should shorten up the lines!

There are Republicans in Leawood?

Dowding....

Just celebrate the fact that you live in GB where true and perfect laws secure your freedoms.

Here in the USA, we have laws and we decide whether we keep them or not....I would doubt seriously that any vote cast for Mel was cast without the knowledge that his widow would fill the Senate seat.

It's nice that you have an opinion regarding our country and its political system, just don't be suprised if we fail to validate it.

Bye Bye

When I first heard this story I thought about like Dowding does.  I thought to myself "this is the most asinine thing I have ever heard.  They have just elected a dead guy."

Toad has graciously pointed out that they did not elect a dead guy (even if it looks like they did since his name is plastered everywhere).  They actually elected the person who was appointed to replace the candidate.

It still sounds wierd to me, but I guess they went and did it anyways.
