I am an Operations Specialist 1st Class (E-6) a.k.a. OS1 (radar, radio, navigation, tactics, targeting)

Soon after we merge with the quartermasters we will expand to celestrial and visual navigation, shiphandling, and flag and light signals (they merged with the Signalman last year)

I have a specialty in Anti submarine/Surface Tactical Air Control (ASTAC) where I control P-3C Orion patrol aircraft in surveillence and targeting and ASW, and primarily control shipboard SH-60B Seahawks in ASW and Anti-surface Serveillance and Targeting operations.

I have been an Air Control instructor for the past 3 years, and will transfer to a Frigate USS MCINERNEY (carries 2 Seahawks) as one of 2 ASTAC's

I'm really looking forward to this assignment since my last ship was a DDG-51 Flight 1 class ship and carried no Helo's so my actual control time is a moderate 400 hours spread over 4 years. On a FFG in the same amount of time I could do over 1000 hours.

Sorry..no offense to native Virginians..I don't like the people here, really don't like the local government or law enforcement (especially the law enforcement), or the weather (it's dreary alot of the time). The roads suck..no one knows how to drive which makes bad roads even worse.

BTW..Va Bch DESERVES to lose NAS Oceana..and I think it's screwed up how they fell far short of fulfilling the demands of the BRAC commission..instead thumbing their noses at BRAC and saying "This is all we are willing to do..what other alternative do you have?"...Maybe Jax will come to it's senses and let them re-open Cecil..it was always a much nicer base anyway.

May a Cat 5 somehow make it's way this far north and scrub the earth clean of this stinky ****-hole.

I have to agree about the govt, Myra is the wicked witch of the East/ Female Boss Hogg.
As for the people you hung in the wrong places.
The roads are as good as they can be considering the City of VB used the cheapest paveing company( Asphalt Roads---2 thumbs down)

As for a cat 5 coming here. have you ever noticed how fast the building go up here? I think a strong cat 3 would do the trick.
As for Oceana, VB did fall short of teh BRAC requirements, but for once I have to thank the city govt for not immediately condeming all the homes. Of course teh people here cant drive, they come from everywhere else :)

Now why do I stay here? Cause I was born here lived here all my life, and I like it here. Believe it or not theres more to this place than roads and that air base. People really need to do something besides go to bars here to actually "get to know " this area.

Never was one much for the bar scene here..I've litterally been all over..my first few years here I lived on the ship..Every day I'd gas up the car and go driving to find something new and interesting. Learned the area pretty well

I've never really felt safe here. They build real nice neihborhoods..right across the street or over the fence from the ghetto..you can't escape the slums because they seem to be everywhere..Thats how we ended up out here in "Pungo". The only area where right next door there wasn't a low-income housing apartment complex (even as a sailor I make too much to live in most places in VB).

As far as the people go..It has more to do with their attitude towards sailors..Never really felt welcome..as soon as people realize you are in the Navy, they seem to look down on you (or try to swindle you). I got a big kick out of the change in attitude when BRAC told VB they were gonna take 1 Billion dollars out of the local economy when the airmen's paychecks aren't here to steal from them anymore.

Exactly.  I experienced, for the most part, the same thing.  Now I know some sailors (& jarheads) have made it hard for other service personel starioned there with their actions but it seems if you wear the uniform you're already marked as one of "them".  I couldn't wait to get the "F" out of the tide water area.  And who's ever heard of topless bars where the dancers can't go topless??????  :D

The Check-out sheet is more than halfway done.

The Navy-hired movers are coming wednesday to pack us up...and thursday to pick up our stuff.

Skating-off for the rest of this week...pick up my service record Friday morning...On the highway by 9-10AM..In Florida by early evening unless we decide to stop..I towing a boat on a trailer I have trust issues wuth..so I'll be stopping alot to check it out..may stay overnight somewhere. Almost seems stupid since my fastest time between Norfolk-Jax is 8 hours..the average is about 10 though(650 miles)

I agree that subdivisions are built in the wrong places, but the secret to that is to not see whats going on in the "hood" But the reason they do that is eventually all the people that live in the "getto" are going to be forced out of Va Beach ( eventually)
I feel pretty safe here, but then I don't hang out in the Getto LOL, I'm either at Peabody's, the Edge, the Beach, the mall, or Mt Trashmore feeding the  geese when they're there, movies dinner stuff like that.
I've never had an attitude towards anybody in the military except my ex, and he's an idiot. I'm one of the ones that love the military here, not just teh money either I have the ultimate respect for peple that fight to keep me free.

If Va beach had been smart they could have said good bye to Oceana a long time ago, remember the sportsplex? When the were first talking about building that the WEashington Redskins said they built a 80,000 seat football staduim they'd move here, I don't like football, but the Redskins could have been Va Beach's way out of the Brac battles once and for all.
If Oceana and the Ford plant both go, this place will go so far down hill that I'll be able to afford to buy a house :) Kinda looking forward to that part . I want a house so bad I'd consider moving away from here.

Wow... there's a couple of names out of the past. If I remember correctly, I went to both of those bars a few times in 1982. I did "A" school at Dam Neck.

Sadly because of the QM/OS rating merger, the "A" School is moving to Great Lakes.

We now have to learn the QM and SM rates (QM/SM merger 2 years ago)..but at least we will still be called OS.

Well... I didn't really see the point of having the QM and OS rates separate anyway.

How do they handle the SM stuff? Is there a separate NEC for semafore?

Oh the horror...
