Never was one much for the bar scene here..I've litterally been all over..my first few years here I lived on the ship..Every day I'd gas up the car and go driving to find something new and interesting. Learned the area pretty well
I've never really felt safe here. They build real nice neihborhoods..right across the street or over the fence from the ghetto..you can't escape the slums because they seem to be everywhere..Thats how we ended up out here in "Pungo". The only area where right next door there wasn't a low-income housing apartment complex (even as a sailor I make too much to live in most places in VB).
As far as the people go..It has more to do with their attitude towards sailors..Never really felt welcome..as soon as people realize you are in the Navy, they seem to look down on you (or try to swindle you). I got a big kick out of the change in attitude when BRAC told VB they were gonna take 1 Billion dollars out of the local economy when the airmen's paychecks aren't here to steal from them anymore.
I agree that subdivisions are built in the wrong places, but the secret to that is to not see whats going on in the "hood" But the reason they do that is eventually all the people that live in the "getto" are going to be forced out of Va Beach ( eventually)
I feel pretty safe here, but then I don't hang out in the Getto LOL, I'm either at Peabody's, the Edge, the Beach, the mall, or Mt Trashmore feeding the geese when they're there, movies dinner stuff like that.
I've never had an attitude towards anybody in the military except my ex, and he's an idiot. I'm one of the ones that love the military here, not just teh money either I have the ultimate respect for peple that fight to keep me free.
If Va beach had been smart they could have said good bye to Oceana a long time ago, remember the sportsplex? When the were first talking about building that the WEashington Redskins said they built a 80,000 seat football staduim they'd move here, I don't like football, but the Redskins could have been Va Beach's way out of the Brac battles once and for all.
If Oceana and the Ford plant both go, this place will go so far down hill that I'll be able to afford to buy a house

Kinda looking forward to that part . I want a house so bad I'd consider moving away from here.
