Is it true? The police were confiscating guns from legal owners during the Katrina disaster?

Yes, it is.

Yes, there was mention of it here. I think it died out pretty quickly because nobody could figure out how to blame it on bush.

It was mentioned, but it was in the same vein as "they're shooting at helicopters" and "george bush broke the levies" and "nobody's rescuing the poor people"  It was pretty well buried in the chaos of the unsubstantiated rumors at the time.

I figured it was just a rumor or a single event blown out of proportion, but as the facts have come out (slowly... there haven't been any big headlines about it)   there's really no controversy... it happened, perpetrated by the highest levels of New Orlean's city government.

All "for your own good."

lots of stuff about it on google

I find it amusing that this guy refers to what is most likely the majority of Americans as the "gun lobby".

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., repeatedly called the bill "insane."

He and some Democrats said the bill might satisfy the gun lobby, but it would put people into more danger during already perilous disasters.

"The streets of an American city immediately after a disaster are no place to abandon common sense," said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y.

I seem to remember a lengthy discussion about it.  It was right about the time that Lt. General Russel Honore rolled into NO on Katrina+4 and told local law enforcement to shoulder their weapons, after they had been fired upon for four days.

Here is the rollcall vote on the bill.

The Chicago Tribune editorial board pulls that crap all the time in Illinois when a gun issue arises. "The NRA Gun Lobby vs. the right minded citizens..." Well Dammit, the NRA is there representing my rights as an Ill gun owner along with about 1.5 million others in the state. A solid number because we have to register as gun owners. You could probably add several hundered thousand more illegal but non criminal (no criminal use) gun owners who just never bothered to register. But, they never mention that people actually own guns and that these regulations impact legal, law abiding gun owners and not the criminals. And I do mean never, it is always the Evil NRA GUN LOBBY.

Listen to this bellybutton clown's justification for confiscation.

WTF? Common Sense? Tell that to the looters, rapists and rioters who want to cause me and my family harm or take our possessions. I guess Carolyn has her body guards, and /or a right to personal carry for security like most politicians allow themselves even in the most heavily regulated firearm areas. Unless it's just an urban legend, even Feinstein carrys for protection, because, well, she's just more special than the rest of her constituents.

Nadler said the bill would prevent police from pickup up guns that could be seized by looters. Police and other law enforcement officials could face a personal lawsuit for picking up guns they later found to be legally owned, he said.

LOL. Man, you are really out of logical arguments when this is the best you can do. Yeah, and dammed right they should face lawsuits, if not a loss of their jobs and jail time.

The NRA had to sue Ray Nagin to start the return of firearms confiscated during Katrina. I'm sure ACLU would have handled it but they were probably busy. Glad the NRA helped them out.

NRA has negotiated an agreement with New Orleans regarding the firearms seized from lawful firearm owners during and after Hurricane Katrina. The issue is pending before the federal court in the case NRA v. Mayor Ray Nagin. On March 15, 2006, lawyers for both sides informed the court that positive settlement negotiations were occurring. New Orleans has now confirmed that it holds a number of firearms and that owners of firearms which may have been confiscated may contact the Property and Evidence division of the New Orleans Police Department in any of the following ways:
