Anyone ever had to deal with vertigo?
« on: August 22, 2006, 07:21:11 PM »
Just wondering.

I woke up one morning, simply looked over at the clock...wham...room spinning worse than anything Ive ever experienced with booze.  Lasted about 20 seconds

Slowly regained myself, walked to bathroom, wham, hit again.   This time a bit less.  I proceed to hurl my brains out.  I never puke, never.

Eventually things returned normal, called in to work and had a friend take me to walk in care.  Noticed I had a culture on the back of my throat blocking the drainage of the inner ear.  After a day or so, back to normal but still wary.

Fast forward two months.  Still dealing with it, some days better than most but I have that unsteadiness like Ive been spun around in an office chair.

Seeing the Dr tomorrow (again)...they've diagnosed it as benign positional vertigo, they think they can clear it up moving my head in various positions that forces the fluid in the inner ear to flush the crystals out that are causing the problem.

Its really un nerving, I was slated to go to my FAA Dr in a few weeks to renew my medical.  I certainly want this overwith and gone!

Talked to a few people who have had this, say it hit them out of the blue then after going thru the office visit Im doing tomorrow, they were fine.

Ever have to deal with this?

Just wondering

Sorry to hear your having trouble!

I have a friend who went thru a similar bout of verdigo.  He went thru several treatments, including atibiotics for an infection.  He got better over time, but it did linger on a bit as you are describing.  Sounds like your Doc has a treatment plan and a good idea whats likely causing your problem.

hope it all works out quickly for you.

Make sure it's over and done with before you go see the flight doc.  And I wouldn't mention a word about it to him.  Stuff like that gets logged and can come back to haunt you later on.  I know a guy who just had his ticket yanked for a childhood illness that he mentioned to the flight doc.  Hasn't had any symptoms of the illness in 30 years and they yanked his ticket.  By all means get it completely solved before you go up again, but keep it under your hat.

How old are you? I've at least 3 conditions that make me dizzy :)

Life gets a lot more interesting as you age :D  As long as you aint pooping on yourself, it could be worse..

Seriously - I know its probably scary but its fairly common so stick with your doctors. You know what it is, so that should make it easier to deal with.

I had a mild case of vertigo after arriving in the Sand Box for Desert Shield/Storm.  Something about flying backwards in a C-5 for 20 hours messed my head up for about 2 weeks.  When sitting, I would put my head down on the work bench, then all of a sudden I'm going 50 MPH.  Someone would open the door to the van, I'd see the cammie netting sway in the wind and think the van was at the end of a pendulum.

Luckily it wasn't permanent, although for a few years, flying for more than 2 hours would cause a recurrence.  And it didn't make me hurl.

My step-mother was much less fortunate.  She had something called Meniere's syndrome which required surgery to correct.  Do you have bouts of tinnitus occurring around the time of the attacks?

I had an inner ear infection about 10 years ago that did the same thing. Mine only lasted a few days and cleared right up.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

dude its a gift! apart from being sick, gotta get that undercontrol, ya rookie.

vertigo rocks and most gravity junkies have to pay thousands and risk thier lives for this rush.

now jumping out of thing with chutes on, diving of rocks into the sea, flying powerless gliders, a bit of rock climbing with no ropes.....that sudded surge through your blood as you look down and feel unsteady 40ft up a silly little rock not worth dying over.....its too good , climbing trees as a kid, jumping out of trees using...... trying to use bed sheets as chute at age 8 or so.......i chase that feeling and of ten hurt myself in the proscess, we made a skate wideo when we were about 10 years ago, and decided it would be cool to hang off the side of a huge multi story car park and film it.

ok, yeah im going nuts, but watermelon if i had vertigo on tap wouldnt go to no stinking doctors."!1

 :t

PS i hope the ear crystals ailment doesnt trouble ya long
400 yrds on my tail, right where i want you... [/size]

I have been dealing with that for the last 7 months.  Doctor thinks my case is purely based on stress levels due to work and what not.  There are times I get a bad case of vertigo to go along with it and I am basically useless like today.

Hi, thanks for asking

BTW, I am 36

Well the head positioning stuff didnt aggravate or induce the vertigo.  And overall...no real change.

Im not getting the dizzy-ness as much as the daze/unsteadiness.  Its sort of like when you first wake up in the morning and stumble around.  Have a cup of coffee or two and you perk up.  Well, Im not perking up.

I have an appointment to see my Dr in 10 days with a potential referral to a ear/nose/throat specialist.

They also think that it may be slowly working out of my system.  Since I've mentioned to vertigo stuff to coworkers and friends, many have shared how they or friends had a bout of it that took a good couple weeks to completely go away.

Its the weirdest thing.  I was at the gym last night and did my 4 mile treadmill bit, cardio and weight lifting.  Felt great.  I seem to have less issues the later in the day than earlier.

Make sense?

Interesting....I hear some ringing off and on but being next to the server room and air conditioning units sort of dulls it.

Good point.

i have experienced things like this when i am dehidrated (once lost conciousness).

most recently i was backpacking with a friend. looked off into the canyon next to us and it appeared that everything was rushing away from me and my ears felt like they had cotton in them and were ringing. drank a bunch of water and ate and i was fine.

Been down that road, its perfect.  Dr told me its not that angle, thus the suggestion for a specialist.

They had me lie down, sit up, stand and check pressure on each.  Lying down and sitting I was 110/68  Standing was 119/71
