Here we go, first look at my F4U-1A.
For some reason the first couple pics came out sort of red. I guess the lighting wasn't quite right and the flash didn't take.
Cockpit floor, stick, rudder and other details in place.
Right side panel. No assembly other than the instrument cluster, mostly just painting detail.
Left side panel. More construction here, mainly on the throttle quadrant. I'm not happy with the way the wires between the quadrant and the bulkhead came out. A big problem I had with Aires is that some parts which PROBABLY should have been seperate assemblies were all built in to one piece (like, the consoles I think should have been SEPERATE from the side walls).
The aft bulkhead, with seat attached.
Looking aft at the completed cockpit tub.
Looking forward. The pic of the unattached forward bulkhead didn't come out.
Looking into the tub from the left. The view from the other angle didn't come out, either.
The cockpit overall was painted Yellow Zinc Chromate, with the side bulkheads painted interior green above the control consoles (per color details I found on another site). All consoles were painted interior black. The interior was then drybrushed with aluminum to bring out details and for weathering. A light wash of Polyscale "Dirt" was then applied for more detail and to dirty up the interior.
At some point one of the lap belts for the flight harness disappeared. Couldn't find it, so installed the seat as is. I'll just say it dropped down off the seat like what happens all the time in my car.
The seat required a little surgery, as trying to remove the ejector posts resulted with the ENTIRE seat bottom tearing out. The replacement aft bulkhead sent by Aires was, unfortunately, for the BIRDCAGE model (if you remember, I mentioned that the mounting posts for the pilot's seat broke. They did on the NEW bulkhead while I was cleaning it up, but I was able to fabricate replacements from some copper wire). This was fixed by cutting off the top portions above the seat off both the replacement and original bulkhead and swapping them.
