For smoke streaks from guns, engines etc., you need to thin out flat black, maybe a little flat grey mixed in.. thin it to translucent... test it on a piece of scrap plastic first... use a 000 or 00 brush, if it's too dark, blot with a q-tip.
Be careful not to loosen the previous coat of paint by over-brushing too much.
Battle damage such as bullet holes can be done with a heated sewing needle, but don't overheat it as the plastic will mush up around the hole... you can simulate the smoke damage from a hole by putting a drop of the abovementioned thinned paint on the hole and then blowing it in the direction of the windstream with your breath.
Man it's been a long time since I built models, can't believe I remember this stuff. I don't think my wife would be very accommodating of
two hobbies, or I might take it up again.
