The A-bomb B-29s flew out of Tinian in the Marianas. The A-bomb B-29s were also stripped of all guns and turrets except for the tail position.

Two B-29s escorted the Enola Gay as far as Japan.  Then they turned back and let EG fly to target alone.  They basically relied on speed, altitude (31,000 feet) and comparatively cruddy Japanese radar for protection.

IIRC, they were spotted, but no defenses were scrambled as a single aircraft was obviously on a recon mission and posed no threat . . .

aAcorrding to my english teacher they were tens of thousands of feet up, therefore they weren't visible nor could you hear the B29 when it came to drop on Hiroshima.  From what i've heard it was relatively cloudy, 31,000 still sounds fairly visible.  B29's were also a common recon/weather plane flying over Hiroshima thus no thought was given after the air raid siren.

(Teachers are good with airplane facts, according to my 9th grade science teacher, the Wright Flyer flew 120 miles in 3 hours:eek: )

I was lucky enough to have lunch with a gentleman from .. I believe it was the 41st fighter squadron. He flew both Jugs, and later Ponies in the Pacific. He described escorting B-29s, downing a Betty that his leader missed on the first pass (they vulched it while it was landing), and being airborne, well south of Hiroshima on a different mission when the a-bomb was dropped.

So, going by his accounts, it sounds pretty reasonable that P-51s were escorting B-29s. He also said he didn't really prefer one fighter over the other, and both in his opinion were the "best fighters of the war".
