TIME OF ACES next FSO Pick sides

Time of Aces

October was a pivotal month for the air campaign on Guadalcanal. It was a time when the men who had arrived in August were clearly at the end of their endurance, for sickness and fatigue hit them after they had survived Japanese bullets. However, new squadrons and crews were arriving, among them VMF-121, led by Major Leonard K. "Duke" Davis. His executive officer, Captain Joseph J. Foss, would soon make a name for himself. Other veterans of the campaign had not stayed idle. Major Smith of VMF-223 had taken his squadron up on 2 October against a raid by Japanese bombers and fighters. The Zero escorts dove on the climbing Navy and Marine Wildcats, quickly shooting down two fighters from VMF-223. Smith exited a cloud to confront three Zeros. He blasted a fighter into a ball of flame. However, the two remaining Zeros got on his tail and peppered the struggling little blue-gray F6F with cannon and machine gun fire. Listening to a repaired radio from a damaged SBD back at Guadalcanal, the crews of Dennis Byrd's VMSB-232 heard Captain Carl call to his skipper. "John, you've got a Zero on your tail!" "I know, I know," Smith replied, "shoot the SOB if you can!" Then all was silence

The reason Tower range is the same as the Fighter and Bomber warning range is to show the squads on the clipboard (visual aid) how far the warning radius is. It serves no other purpose than that since radar is off.

CM Notes
- Frame C.O.'s will place Task Groups within a 4 sector area. Task Groups must remain in those 6 sectors.
- Jump task groups to positions requested by Frame C.O.'s the last 5 minutes. Each side has 3 Task Groups.
- Destroy 5' guns in Task groups.
- Allow players to man all other ack in Task Groups.
- Set time to 9 am If you are unable to be a Frame C.O. then it is your responsibility to find a replacement within your squad or trade with someone in another squad. Details on how to be a Frame C.O. can be found here.

Can someone explain why we're flying late war rides in the Solomons.  Joe Foss flew a F4F, not an F4U-1D.  I got excited to fly the Wildcat reading the description, and then I see F6F and F4U-1D...

I know there must be a reason--just like to hear it...

Sometimes we do not have to follow history but make it fun. It was from 1942 just spiced up the rides. Thanks for the info :aok

Can I ask that you might consider adding some KI84s into the mix.

The allies have 3 rock solid rides in the F6F-5, F4U-1D, and P38L. The IJAAF and IJN .. well the A6M5b is really not competitive against any of those planes. The Ki61 is only moderately competitive and (imo) only the N1K2 really can stand toe to toe with the allied plane set.

I'm a little confused...

First it says its a Navy/Marine flight of wildcats, then its talking about 'little' F6F's (Not a wildcat and not little)...  Then the plane set doesnt even have a wildcat (F4F).

I understand that sometimes its more fun to fly the hot planes, but I'd really rather see these events stick to their time periods...

There were lots of late war battles that would have offered this plane set with some history to back it up.

Thanks for the info Kurt but the event will run like it is. We have sceneros FSO and Snapshots that follow history sometimes but it is good also to have some fun and see how things turn out when you change a couple of things.

I hope you don't think I'm challenging the validity at all.  I'm not.  And we'll fly it as best as we can.

I just think that more imagination could have yielded the same planeset on the same map later in the war.

I guess all I'm saying is that if FSO is supposed to have some historical aspect, then it should.  But applying aircraft from 2 years later is kinda 'alternative history'.  And while fun I don't think thats what people are seeking when they come to FSO.

I'm not trying to get all up in your arse..  I'm just politely saying that cry babies who have a problem with early war birds should maybe find another venue instead of causing this one to become diluted.

Lets not forget that you COULD design a 'Battle of Britain' using Spit XiV and XVI againsts 109K and 190D's with a 262 here and there...  Just for fun we could toss in a KI84.  Heck, it might be fun... But it would not be 1939...  It would be the Main Arena... and we already have that.

If you want to design a late war scenario lets just call it that rather than calling it a 1942 fight.... I guess thats my point.

Once again, I forgot the passwords.
Why I need to remember two of them is still a mystery to me
so here is our side request.  If someone could send them
to me I would be grateful.
