Make the howitzer spawnable at a spawn point. It would not move. It would simply spawn at a forward vehicle spawn and then be able to shell a town or base from long range just like the cruiser does now. It would be cool to have a squad deploy a battery and support an attack that way.

Unlike a manned gun, you would get a kill for destroying one.

I would love artillery in any form.  More targets for attack planes, would need some flaks to protect them or they would be sitting ducks.

that's actually a great idea!!!

easier to model than anything else previously suggested. just up a big gun from the spawn, no need to for an engine or anything. make it so that whenever you exit flight you get a successful landing, but unlike the field guns, you register as dying sould you be destroyed. :aok

would be great, score the mission as vehicle to save on any other work.

if this idea is used, i vote that the artillery type be the Soviet ML-20 152mm heavy gun.

The 5 inch HE is already modelled for range and balistics with Land mode option Although the rate of fire of the naval 5 inch may be too high for field equivilents.

The 88mm has HE and AP modelled and we could start with the 88 AA graphics.

The 5 inch will be able to range facilities from a spawn point (via land mode)without being a Wunder Weapon.

The 88mm (properly camoflaged) could be a good method of eliminating spawn campers.

Both could be lightly perked with a formation option to create a field battery effect.

Spawning a formation of 3 x 88mm field guns would be a very effective way of clearing the area of a couple of spawn campers.

On the subject of towed weaps. instead of just spawning into position, I'd like to see em towed into battle. With a nice hinderence on movement. Do like this idea though, Shelling a town from an elevated position sounds kewl. :t :p :t
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

Actually, I kind of liked the old "Dawn of Aces" artillery option.  There were arty locations spaced throughout the terrain.  You could call in artillery, acting as a spotter from either an airplane or zepplin.  You'ld use the map to place the initial spotting round, then call in corrections to walk the barrage onto the target.  The arty battery nearest to the designated target and in range would deliver the fire mission.  You could also, as I recall, call in smoke rounds.  I think something like this would be better than having direct control of the guns, as even a single player can direct fire without the need for a second to operate the guns.  In addition to spotting from airplanes (could even designate specific a/c that would be used for this), GV's could also act as a spotting platform.  Thus, a single player in a jeep, hiding in a grove of trees, becomes an effective striker.  You could even add the option to call in illumination (star) shells for night, though that would of course be a lot harder to implement.

The downside of course is that the arty could not be used in the direct-fire role, i.e. as and AT gun.
