Garth brooks

I just gotta do this (I'm totally prepared for the flames so fire away  ).  I absolutely despise ole Garthy boy.  He IS the Anti-Hank.  There is nothing even remotely "Country" about this clod who's favorite band growing up was KISS.  Sorry...just the site or sound of this guy makes me snarl.  Sure, in reality there really is not much real country left, but this guy single-handedly set that trend into motion.

Aww come on.

That manson dude grew sort of grey and didn't have enough shock value.

So, they find someone else.

This has been going on for a very long time - I remember my grandmother (a very fine lady) saying with a laugh that she thought the beatles were pure evil  .

Just more of the same

There is a vast gulf between "We gotta make our government do what's right"
-'60s era protest
And "Blow away the pigs your girlfriend your mother ya dig"
-Modern "gangsta" rap
One is an expression of desire for change in society, the other is merely that societies dirge
There is nothing "pure" or "passionate"
about this fecal matter
That is if you're the kind of person that cannot equate rape to passion.
If you can, you need help.

Just to put things into perspective.... all you "old men" complaining here.... it's your kids and other kids who grew up in the society YOU created that feel compelled to buy those records.
Congratulations. Job well done.

"the great bands and music of my era... Moody Blues, Bad Company, Aerosmith, to name a few"

Wow Eagler, I almost blew my mouthful of coffee all over the screen!

I'll have to say, I envisioned you as a young man (who refused to wear anything but his Boy Scout uniform), jumping around the living room listening to "The Best of John Philip Sousa."

Ya learn somethin' new every day!

Nope, never was a Boy Scout, Cub Scout when I was 8 for about a year, just long enough to get creamed in the pine run derby
Here's a couple more bands that come to mind:
Led Zep, Outlaws, Thin Lizzy, Dan Folgerberg (just saw him in concert a few months back - amazing one man show), Deep Purple, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, Beach Boys, Queen,.. just about everything that wasn't acid rock or on the other extreme - disco or bubblegum   Like I said earlier, you can still find these artists on the radio, don't think the "artists" of today will be around in 2021 except in some MTV filler BS.

Never heard of John Philip Sousa   but I do find myself listening to Bach, Mozart and the like on NPR - man, I must be getting old

The funny thing is that Eminem is getting all the bad press and all these other rappers that say far worse are considered OK.

For two reasons.

1.  He's far more popular.
2.  You can understand what he's saying.

I wouldn't say the others are conisdered OK, they just are either not tha popular, or their "ebonics" is so screwed up nobody can figure out WTF they are saying.

Is that why everytime I see an interview with one of these Einsteins, they seem to end every sentence with: "Ya see what I'm sayin?" Are they aware that they are unintelligible, and consequently look for approval of every sentence?

And an addendum for those of you who imagine you possess an artistic soul.
The Moody Blues could let you know how they felt, in a language understood clearly.
The Doors could expose and lay bare the dark side of the soul, without resorting to pictures.
Alice Cooper combined shock with something called "talent", haven't seen the wannabe's get there yet.
And last of all,
Anyone trying to put Rappers in the same category as Miles Davis,Otis Redding,Barry White, etc, needs to be put away so they cannot harm themselves.
Sheesh, Taste in music? oxymoron, you listen to music first of all, and music is rhythm and melody, they got the rhythm part, but melody?

LOL, you guys just aren't teenagers anymore  .

I feel the exact same way as you do, and I'm only 25.

The fact of the matter is that regardless of just *how* teens express their desire to revolt, the *do* it by using music in part.

In the 60's, there wasn't a real need to go to extremes. Elvis wrigging his hips was considered very bad and many tv shows only filmed him from his head up.

Now, we're desensitized and need more.

It's not for me to say that the REAL music was made in 19XX. Or rather it is but then I'd have to admit that I sort of belongs to a specific generation and with the associated musical values.

It'd be wrong of me to belittle current generations - the music will or will not stand the test of time (and most of it won't), so I'll just wait and pass judgement when I know I am right  .

Besides, having intelligent conversations with teenagers is as likely as meeting a non dweeb chog driver - happens now and then, but not often

Someone please explain to this old man why our non minority youth try to emulate the lowest common denominator of the minority youth in this country.

The same reason you probably emulated The Beatles or other rebelling groups in your time.  Teens throughout our modern history always feel restricted by their parents close minded views on society and the way things work.  It is their way of breaking free and experiencing life they way they want to.  The same reason teenagers grew long hair in the 60s.   They grow out of it. It's not a tragedy.
