Eminem: Man of the Hour?
« on: February 22, 2001, 02:18:00 PM »
Think it should read "Boy of the Hour"
Another sad commentary of the status of our youth and thus our future
 http://www.foxnews.com/foxlife/022101/eminem_side.sml

Someone please explain to this old man why our non minority youth try to emulate the lowest common denominator of the minority youth in this country
Is it just the latest form of rebellion?

Is it just the latest form of rebellion?

Rebellion is just one of many "Identity Crisis's" that youths experience.  It covers the ages.  In my time, bell-bottom, torn jeans, and home made tattoos were 'In', and its just another form of what one goes thru in the transition from puberty to Man(woman)hood.

The difference between now and, say 100 years ago (or any time frame you'd like to use) is that we,as a society, are more tolerant (not me, but I know of those who are) of such identity crisis's.

Since when is bashing an alternative lifestyle something new?

If I remember correctly there were some really racist and anti-sematic guns 'n roses songs too...

But as far as eminem is concered, I like his music... especially his views on the pop music culture. Though I don't listen to the songs that the roadkill liberal media is always bsing about as being violent (kim, ammityville?), since they suck. I think that people are disecting his music too much, no one is forcing you to listen to it and if you do, you will notice that its not as bad as the media makes it out to be. When he sings those lyrics it doesn't mean hes going to do what hes saying, hes just speaking whats on his mind.

The main reason I like Emenim though, is because his music is passionate, as you can see this in him when hes performing.

"First of all, I want to thank everybody who could look through the controversy and see the album for what it was — and also for what it isn't."

What?!?  Look through the controversy?  His whole career was created through marketing controversy.  This is the same amazinhunk who popped pills during a performance in November and told the audience it was Ecstacy.

I never understand how this crap is considered "music".  Performers that take an existing song/lick and simply create new lyrics to it (or simply rap and can't sing a tune) should not be considered musical artists.  They are simply writers inspired by someone else's work.

I've never even heard of the guy but that's not saying much.   My musical taste generally ends in the 80's. Not that their isn't some new stuff that I like. I never have liked rap. It was just starting to come in when I got out of high school. Even then their were VERY VERY few kids listening to it. (1983) But by the time my brother went to high school it was the rage. (1990) I never have understood it. I don't like the base only beat, the lyrics and songs all sound the same to me. (I sound like some parent from the 50's   ) I guess I grew up in a different environment. Why the hell would someone want to glorify the rape and touchier of women in a song? I don't know, but I guess Jim Morrison did it in that one song about the Sun of Sam or some body and I like that song (I forget the name). The one difference is that song never actually comes out and tells you what it's really about. It's hidden. Like the fade out in the old movies just before the humping or killing started. It's the difference between a Hitchcock movie and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I think it's a bad thing to delve to deeply into subjects like that in a song that is meant to shock and enrage only. My mom was telling me that the new initiation to gangs is to cut off a woman's body part and bring it back. Could it be these songs that are driving this new kick? Sick sick f'in world.

Here's the lyrics to his song "Kim": http://www.eminemworld.com/mmlp16.html

If this guy wasn't white, there would be Congressional hearings about him.  Is Elton John stupid or is he just craving attention?  I can understand an unknown artist like Dido performing with him and letting him hijack one of her songs (read: naive Brit) but Elton John?

i don't have anything meaningful to say about eminem and i cant back my position up with reason - that said - i just hate him because he symbolizes a type of person that i dont like him  -you know the type:

they are white but they talk like they were raised in oakland. they walk around with floppy saggy clothes and a pissed off look on their face. silly sideways ballcap or some other clown gear - (i'm wondering when big red noses will become vogue) they have that fake limp. they have those painted up, loud, crass, constantly aggitated, jerry springer type girlfriends usually toting a couple of youngins around with em and doing strange chickenesque head movements and shaking their fingers at everything. they are from the suburbs but wish desperately that they were really from the ghetto because at least then they would have a sense of identity and a 'cause' to struggle against.

they dont do or think anything meaningful they are just sloppy and waste space-

Great song .... talk about a moron. Amazing people (kids) buy this crap. Rap is for those who can't sing but love to scream. As I told my boys, time will tell. In 20 years you won't see these "musicians" anywhere around like you see the great bands and music of my era... Moody Blues, Bad Company, Aerosmith, to name a few.

The funny thing is that Eminem is getting all the bad press and all these other rappers that say far worse are considered OK.

Now don't get me wrong I don't listen to Eminem and I don't agree with what he is saying but come on....

MTV makes a big deal about hate crimes and how they should stop(which DUH! they should) but they keep playing videos from bands that do nothing BUT spew hate. It's OK to play videos of minorities spewing hate about whites but it's not OK for whites to spew hate about minorities or gays.

Fair Hunh?

MTV used to be fun to watch because they used to be creative in their videos but now all it  shows is T/A and people hurting others.

Sorry! Hijacked the thread into a MTV bashing.
I have been reborn a new man!

I know what you mean, Eagler. Just the other day I asked my wife the question, "How in the hell did these crotch grabbing foul mouth punks get this stuff into mainstream acceptance?????"

She answered, "The kids like it." And she shrugged her shoulders.

I must agree with her sentiment since you can hear this stuff 24 hours a day on the radio, and you can't really shelter your kids from it. Our kids do have a cd or two that has the F word and some sexual inuendo in it - real ghetto crap, in my opinion. But our kids are doing well in school and they attend church on Sundays, and youth group on Wednsday nights, and they seem well adjusted. So I don't get all bent out of shape about it, or make an issue about it. But I don't like it.

We tell our kids if they want to dye their hair green, or have a Mohawk haircut, have at it. If they want to have a pierced belly button, or 6 holes in their ears, go right ahead, within reason. If they want to wear their clothes inside-out, or their shoes on the wrong feet, or wear black lipstick - enjoy! But we have zero tolerance for drugs and tattoos.

I'm trying really hard not to be an old fart, but it gets harder everyday

If I'm entitled to an opinion, I see him as a fabricated "artist" based on demographics. He is a gangsta wannabe... even had to go out and get himself arrested on weapons charges just so he could be "real". Pure posturing!

Wonder how many fans would tolerate him in their homes 15 minutes... speaking of which, I won't be sorry when his 15 minutes are up. My only concern is who will come next- gotta keep that shock value rising, you know.
