That's debatable. You are shaped by your youth experiences into the person you are later in life. Say between the ages of 12 and 20 the average youthful mind is a sponge. Think it is important to be careful what one soaks up with it. I saw this artist on a PPV concert, about 10 minutes,(PPV is free, TW perk, would never pay for his trash) and about 5 minutes on a MTV interview. Just a punk arse white kid wishing he was a ghetto black,... for whatever reason. Probably for the $$$ he collects from other misguided youth and their dumb arse parents which allow such filth into their homes and minds..
Sorry, I just don't think this as a positive influence on our youth and thus the future of this country. And what isn't light is dark .....

My favourite band when I was 14 was Nirvana. I thought the song "Rape Me" was actually quite good.

But I haven't turned out too bad. Well IMO, anyway.

Eminem just appeals to the angsty side of teenagers - his marketing people want that above anything else.

But teenage rebellion has changed completely since the sixties. With the Sex Pistols, The Clash et al in the late 70s and early 80s, to the Nirvana and now eminem - rebellion is far more angsty.

The Beatles sang about love and friendship or just being out of your tree on pot/acid/whatever.

Yes, but at the time what The Beatles were singing about was shocking the up tight parents who had no life experience outside of their own little circle.  That's basically what is going on today, just horrible music.  Personally, I can't stand his music, but believe it or not, kids know what is right and wrong if they have been brought up properly.  If they have not had a stable home life than music isn't going to make a difference, regardless of what they listen to.

I like all the stuff he's realised as singles. They are usually quite funny and not that offensive.

But I've read lyrics from the unreleased stuff which is pretty sick. But I think anyone with even a modicum of intelligence (most kids have this, it seems to me) can see that the lyrics are meant to shock, and that it is a huge marketing ploy. I'm sure Eminem doesn't see it that way, but it's in his interest to come across as a person dealing with 'issues'.

BTW, Limp Bizkit rule - they are pretty unsavoury also.

Aww come'on. In my mid/late teens, gangsta-rap was just becoming popular and after that I moved on to punk/indie stuff. You know, the anti-social/goverment/system/whateveryouridealsarestuffwedontlikeit and I dont go around shooting cops, blowing up goverments, etc.
It doesnt matter, as long as you got a background (education!) to seperate the lyrics from reality!.
I'd much rather have guys like Eminem around, who in his own obscure way at least offers something to discuss than the dumb & dumber lyrics of Spice Girls, 911 whathave you.
What's really interesting with this discussion is that I see many here, who usually screams about PC'ness going too far being against Eminem

If we are to combat outrageous statements made by artists, we really should shoot the writers of love songs.

they create an anrtificial idealized and impossible picture of love, push it down the throats of children a who subsequently get divorced at about a 57% rate.

Now divorce means possibility of kids.

That's evil.

KILL THE LOVE SONG WRITERS!

Daff, it's really quite simple.  Some people have discriminating taste, an educated ear, an appreciation of talent.

That leaves Eminem on my "this talentless punk and his rip-off record company will say or do anything for money, who gives a s*** list."

"Political Correctness" has nothing to do with it.

The problem is, Cabby, that you can't quantify "good" or "bad" music..it all depends on who's listening. Music means something different to each person. There's probably plenty of people that think the music you like is crap and pure noise. With music more than any visual arts, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Daff:

Oh yes.  You CAN quantify taste.  All it takes is knowledge, training, experience, and most of all, the backbone to say so.  In other words, under all circumstances and conditions, dogsh*t is dogsh*t.  The best you could expect from dogsh*t is to have it called "fertilizer".

And to those who say some of us are too "old" to "understand" garbage from the likes of Eminem, you obviously are woefully ignorant musically, inexperienced,  and have a tin ear to boot.

Music changes and that is good as long it's instrumental with a good beat on it.

I could listen many types off music as long as it is good.

Why instrumental because music is an art done by people who trained a lot on their instruments. When u got some off them togheter and they teamup, most beautiful things can come out no electronic thing can ever match that IMO.

Music is for the soul so it got to come from it too.

Ok, Cabby, what determines what kind of music is good and what is crap?. Dont throw a stack of band-names at me...describe what it takes to make good music and why.

What it takes??  Talent, Inspiration, Originality, Musicianship.

Why???  Because a good musician has to.

You are right.  I won't compare and contrast a list of good/great musicians with talent-less trash.  It is disrespectful to the good ones and only encourages the trash.

Music appreciation is a lot like learning to drink alcohol, make love, and drive an automobile.  Maturity, experience, and intelligence make each of those activities a more pleasant and satisfying experience.

Really???  I'd say it's more like discriminating taste and a very low tolerance for sleazy, exploitative, BS.  If that description of Eminem's "talent"(LOL)offends you, well, good!!!

BTW, what instruments does Eminem play??

I pretty sure that Eminem's record company, if not Eminem himself, is quite familiar with the methods of P.T. Barnum.

"You'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American Public".
