I'm salivating.

Guys, your Korea arena (it's been done already!!!!) is just foreplay--a Vietnam arena will be the hot 'n sweaty s3X that every boy dreams about.  :D

F-8's had 18 kills to 3 losses for a 6.3 to 1 kill ratio, the best of any US fighter in Vietnam.  You're right though, most kills were with AIM-9s.

The number of kills attributed to the 105 is high but given that they flew 20,000 missions over North Vietnam they had a much greater opportunity for kills....of course they also lost 320 planes in the process and their kill per sortie rate was tiny.  Actually, it turns out it wasn't much of a "gunfighter".

Well, the Thud was about as maneuverable as a loaded school bus... Its kills were more the result of finding an enemy fighter stumbling into their gunsight rather than maneuvering for a shot. Nonetheless, considering how many sorties they flew, and how many SAMS they encountered as well as the heaviest tripleA one could imagine, they proved extremely tough and reliable. Their loss rate was something close to 0.016 per sortie.

that’s not really a proper comparison the Thud ran into way way more migs and target rich environments then the F-8 Crusader

its like comparing the Hellcat vs. the Corsair    the hellcat got more kills because it was used more and in richer target environments  and missions
known as Arctic in the main

I wasn't making a comparison, merely stating that F-105s had more gun kills than F-8s.
