Would you rather be damaged even when you are apparently not hit, or would you rather not deal damage even when you apparently hit your enemy? There are two ways of dealing with lag in games. The less common way is to make it so that only if both computers register a hit does the hit count. The more common way, which Aces High uses, is to make a hit count if the firer's computer registers a hit. With the former method, there is much more frustration, as seldom do hits count.
