Okay, so I have this Apricorn 100 gig external hard drive  that I've decided to employ in order to back up the 6 gig of pictures we've taken in 4 games.

It requires a USB jack for power and for port.

I use a USB 4- hub receptacle.

When I plug this thing in, it works, but painfully slow, even copying over a 112 meg folder (about 12 minutes).

I unplugged it, then plugged it back in, WinXP asks "you can do this faster, dummy, by using one of your available USB2.0 ports, click here to search for one"  So I do. It finds one and happily begins downloading the next folder that I copy.  No speed improvement whatsoever.

Is this because of the bottleneck of my USB 4 port hub?
Should I connect the external HD directly into the laptop for improved speed?

Your USB hub is USB1, not USB2 I would initialy think. But I am not a hardware nerd :)

<-- happened to me, hub is collecting dust.

Thats what I'm thinking too, but why would XP tell me "transfer faster by find an open USB 2.0 port.." and when it does, its still slow? Confused. :)

When it finished the folder its copying, I'll try to hook it directly to the laptop (Should have done this first before posting. :) )

I get that message when I hook up my mp3 player to the computer, only problem is that both original usb ports and the card I had put in are all usb1:(, the computer says it supports usb2, but I'm not buying a $20 card and haveing it put in unless theres a blazeing speed difference, since my mp3 player is only 4gig. My printer doesn't seem to care if its usb1 or 2 LOL
