Anyone have any experience with LoJack?
« on: September 30, 2006, 09:42:42 AM »
Was looking at theft deterant devices and realised I don't know anyone that has used the LoJack system before.  I have been to thier webpage but it's not very useful for the info I am looking for.  What exactly is it?  How much does it cost?  Is it a monthly subscription like XM radio?  Is it big?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Does Lojack tell people to put stickers all over advertising that it's LoJack?  I thought the idea was that it was a theft recovery, not deterrent.

Maybe some prefer to get cash from the insurance company for a new car rather then get a stolen car back that may have been vandalised.

lojack is a small device. you will prolly never see it. they hid it well and tell no one where it is. lojack is a recovery system for sure. however most professional car thieves will let your car sit for at least 24 hours in a safe area and watch it to see if the cops come before they go to work on it. if i was buying a new car there would be 2 things i would get. 1 would be a lojack the other would be to have your VIN number etched on all the glass of the car. of coarse if you live with in a hundred miles of the mexican boarder forget about it one the car gets over there it gone in that case buy gap insurance.

Isn't Lojack that guy who works with Hank Hill at Strickland Propane?

Diablo, If you could get a wire harness for your vehicle, I could give you one of my products, John Deere, komatsu, Kobadi and New holland are looking at an OEM for it.
I have it made in France and my R&D section are in Long beach, I never bother usually with the comsumer market as you need to have some form of a wire harness installed for it to work, but if you are able to do this then i would let you have one.
Basically, it's water proof, tamper proof and shock proof, it's 384 bit encryption too, the unit taps into the power, fuel, brakes and hydrauclics, unless you have the key fob, the vehicle won't start-ever, it's never been defeated yet, you try and cut the unit out and it blows fuses and shuts of power etc at random intervals.
I have it tied into my Telematics product so the vehicle can be shut down remotely, I'm currently working with the DOT and homeland security for this very scenario, in other words, a vehicle gets hijacked, a Fed can shut it down from his desktop or, he can drive up behind  it and punch in codes via his cell phone, that way he can bring it to a gradual halt at a place and time of his/her choosing.
Obviusly you wouldn't need this level of sophistication, but Like I said, if you can get the wire harness, I can get you a unit, heck, i'll even let you have it for nothing since you had a terrible time recently.
No monthly subs or anything like that, it justs sits in you car and does it job.
Lemme know

The way it used to work:
Once your car is reported stolen it sends a location signal every 10 seconds. Police cars with a Lojack, four antennas usually towards the rear on the roof. Inside the police car a series of numbers / letter pops up on the screen with an arrow pointing towards it, the officer runs the number like a license plate and gets all the vehicle info.

Once the Lojack is alerted its being tracked, it send signals every few seconds.

I recovered a few Lojack & Teletrack stolens.. the teletrack were more fun tho, they had a dispacther keeping us alerted to the vehicles location in real time.

Onstar does the same thing, but I believe they can disable the vehicles ignition when its parked.

Not all police cars have a Lojack, some have Money lojacks to track bank bags, usually 3 antenna towards the front on the roof. Lojack installs them in police cars free.

Things may have changed a lot since my retirement, but Lojacks were pretty solid.
