New Computer
« on: October 04, 2006, 08:05:12 PM »
Looking for some input. I'm planning on buying a new computer for myself for Christmas this year. I've set my budget for 3k. I'm seriously looking at an Alienware Area-51 7500 series desktop with a few performance mods that bring the total price including shipping to just at the 3k limit.

Here is what I'm looking at:
[1] Area-51® 7500

Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2MB Cache 1066MHz FSB
Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows® XP Professional with Service Pack 2
Chassis: Alienware® P2 Chassis - Cyborg Green
Chassis Upgrades: Alienware® AlienIce™ 3.0 Video Cooling - Nova Yellow
Power Supply: Alienware® 700 Watt Multi-GPU Approved Power Supply
Motherboard: Alienware® Approved NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI Motherboard
Memory: 4GB DDR2 Performance SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 x 1024MB
System Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ 8MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 16x Dual Layer DVD±R/W Drive
Secondary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 52x32x52x CD-RW Drive
Graphics Processor: 512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 7950 GT
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 920N 19" 8ms Flat Panel - Black
Sound Card: High Performance 7.1 Audio - Standard
Speakers: Logitech® X-530 5.1 70-Watt Speakers
Keyboard: Alienware® USB Full-Size Keyboard
Mouse: Alienware® Optical 3-Button Mouse with Scroll Wheel
Warranty: 1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service
AlienRespawn: Alienware® Respawn Recovery Kit
Removable Storage: 3.5-Inch Floppy Disk Drive
Power: UPS Protection - Opti-UPS Gaming Series GS1100B UPS/Backup/AVR (550W)
Alienware Extras: AlienInspection - Exclusive Integration and Inspection - $100 Value - FREE!
Alienware Extras: AlienWiring - Exclusive Internal Wire Management - $100 Value - FREE!
Alienware Extras: Exclusive AlienGUIse Theme Manager

Anyway, does anyone else have experiance with Alienware? One of the guys at work has one of their laptops and he loves it, but I've never talked to anyone with a desktop from them built for gaming. I keep hearing they are the best but since this is the first computer I've bought in over 10 years (built all my own up to this point) I want to do some comparison shopping before I lay the money out.

You can configure what ya want...Same as alienware I believe.

I saved quite abit at the time when building the same pc's basically from both places.

Just a thought.

Good Luck and Enjoy the new one.

Hey ya Hornet,  Copy the above info you posted and PM LTARmoil with it.  He owns and operates his own computer store, sells, services, including design and building.  Advice is free :)

Yes, Moil is an excellent pilot.  He taught Doobs everything he knows.  Doobs would be completely useless in the game without Moil's tutelage.

I bought an alienware gaming laptop a few years ago, and had no end of trouble with it. First one they shipped was defective out of the box, so after some ahssle they sent me an exchange one. Second one worked at first, but then had new instability problems.

Had endless tech support calls about unusual crashes, complete with repetitive "fix" suggestions (Do you guys even READ the notes from the last call?), and had to reformat and reinstall multiple times per their direction.

Literally 6 weeks later, with nonstop attempts at the fix, finally got a supervisor who knew which orifice to speak from...and found out that the entire problem was a vid card fan. They replaced it, but the experience was...ugly.

On top of all that, I specifically got the upgradable vid card, but wasnt ever able to take advantage of it because they didnt make any further cards with the proprietary interface.

Even now the thing doesnt run AH nearly as fast as it should given its specs.

This time, I built my computer from the case up, with advice from the guys at our Hardware and Software forum. It was easy to do, saved a TON of money, and left me with a very, very fast computer....I'd highly recommend it.

I build my own these days.

Alienware is over priced.
