Storch you are both right and wrong, many Europeans would look to America and see certain things they would like for their own country. I for one would like to see certain things done the 'American way'. But to be fair, when I look to France, Spain, Australia etc I would see things to envy there too. I daresay, Americans would look to aspects of Europe they would like too.

In fact you are wrong about Americans moving to Europe. According to the US embassy here, there are 100,000 Americans resident in Ireland. Many are permanent, some are returned Irish with US citizneship. But it's still a lot. Other European countries no doubt have higher numbers. And yes there is the phenomenom of the American illegal alien:O I've met a few.
As for the Irish illegals in the US. They are no longer escaping poverty and oppression back home. Most are in it for the adventure and the 'land of opportunity'. They should come home. Can't say that for the Russians though. The immigration system in the US is skewed anyway and seems to favour non Europeans. But that is a problem for you guys.

In fact the EU is seen as a 'land of opportunity' by many in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. We have a small problem with Romanian, Russian, African and South American illegal immigrants believe it or not.

You are completely wrong about economic goings on not affecting goings on in Europe or elsewhere. Have you forgotten the Wall street crash of 1929. That plunged Europe into depression too. The US economy is so big and powerful that when it coughs we all get blown over. The economies of Europe and the US are completely intertwined and dependant on each other.

It's too easy to think negatively about the relationship between Europe or more specifically parts of Europe and the USA. Like many I have a positive view of America and Americans based on my experiences. I imagine Americans have similiar experiences. But you can't insult me by saying Europe is crap because Europe is not a country and I don't gaze proudly on the blue flag of Europe. You simply cannot generalise about Europeans because we are all very different.

I have never stated nor do I view europe or europeans as crap. I did forget about the popularity of erin as a place for a second home amongst the well to do here. I assure you that there are many irish illegal here. while not as many as central Americans still enough to make me notice. my litmus test for legal resident status is simple. any applicant for work is asked to fill out an employment application, I interview all applicants (since it's a pissant firm I can do that) during the interview I inform them that the application needs to be reviewed by the Feds because we provide services for MIA, FTL, OPA, other airports and both of the ports. at that point many choose to go about their business securing employment elsewhere. many are european and a few have been australian. forgive me but I wasn't around in 1929 but from what I understand europe was mildly affected by that depression with the notable exception being germany though at the time the weimar republic had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel due to the internal bickering over the sordid topic of money and the actual conflict between leftist and national socialist extremists so that example hardly counts. all in all europe weathered the American depression pretty well. but please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all relative, Lukster. This country is only as big as Maine with a population of 4M. Funnily enough I went to the supermarket with my wife just after writing the last thing and keep meeting Yanks, some working there, some shopping. There was even a bunch of American teenagers blocking the aisles in the video store. I'm not even counting tourists. Rather ironic.

Yes Storch there are plenty of illegal Irish there. They were whinging on TV here recently about their problems. No sympathy for them. There is plenty of work here if they want it, not to mention in the rest of Europe. To be fair a lot of them give it a year or two just for the experience. Then come back.

Rest assured the depression did affect Europe too and any downturn in the American economy does effect Europe, not to mention the rest of the world. Imagine if there's a recession in the States. Who would buy all the junk China makes to sell in Walmart?

Sounds like there are more of Irish descent in America than there are in Ireland. I have ancestors from Ireland, Sweden, and who knows where else.

consider yourselves blessed to have "yanks" amongst you. they will singlehandedly (as it were) vastly improve your society in manners, eating habits, dental and personal hygiene, looks and most of all true humility. If I were you I'd immediately hook up my young adults with these "yanks" in an effort to improve the genepool for the greater good of europe.
