I thought it had something to do with being heavier-than-air, as opposed to airships. So a VMF would REALLY mean a Heavier-than-air Marine Fighter squadron.

I believe that's why aircraft carriers are designated CV.

so back then, were the aircraft on the cv's (corsairs, F6F's, Fm2's, F4F's) under the military branch of "U.S.Navy" or The "Marine Corp.", hence being called Fixedwing  MarineCorp.  Fighter?  

or was Marine Corp a division of the US navy?

Naval squadrons are just VF....not VMF, IIRC.

Naval terminology

V - Fixed wing
M - Marine Corps
F - Fighter

Not sure where V came from, but probably so it's not confused with the F for fighter.

The Marine Corps gets most, if not all, of its aviation money from the Navy.  So they tend to use a lot of the Navy's abbreviations and nomenclature.  Marine aviation units are named the same as a similarly equipped Navy squadron, but with an 'M' in the second position.  As an example, a Navy attack squadron is designated VA, while a Marine attack squadron is VMA.

I am a New-Bee to AHII. But I am interested in finding a squad now.

A little about me:

1. I am a 58 y\o Retired Hospital Cardio-Pulmonary Services Director
2. What combat flight experience I've had was as a frequent passenger in
    Huey's with Delta company 3rd Bat. 173rd Airborne in 1968 during TET.

So far I have
 
1.  Purchased a Saitek X52 System and learned how to Profile it.
2.  Made my own set of Rudder pedals.
      See: Adding Pictures to your Forum Posts or Replys in the
              Hardware and Software Forum. (Reply # 1)
3. Spent a lot of time in the Offline Practice area.
4. Since I first saw your Recruitment post I have been practicing
    with the F4U-1D.

I will be really interested in teamwork and cooperation, using real tactics
for wingmen, flights, and full squadron-strength

I am a fan of the F4U since Boyington and the Black Sheep.
I am not a veteran with experience in a squad.
I am interested in and capable of the type of team-work you are
wanting to establish.

There are some things that I can help teach everyone.
There are many things I can Learn from veterans with experience in a squad.

sax is a fun guy, you'll have a good time with him. might i suggest you try flying in the training arena for a while as you get started, it can really help you get your feet off the ground good luck

online after you sign up (you get 2 weeks free sub without any credit card details. if you decide you like it it's 14.95 a month to fly online in the big arenas, but offline and 8-player multiplayer remains free)

One thing to be aware of with Corsairs of all makes is that they're not easy planes to learn on. She's got a lot of tools, but expect to die often until you get a handle on them. So you won't get a lot of instant gratification out of the Hog, but she's VERY rewarding once you learn what she can do.

Anyway, welcome to the game, and thanks for the interest. I'm usually online in the evenings in one of the LW arenas so look for me. I'll try and make it on tonight.

Just a quick announcement that the addition of the F4U-1A means the Bucs will use that aircraft as the official squadron ride. Whenever we get going.

VMF-251's website is now sort of up. Still under VERY early construction, but at least has a general mission statement.
