Interested in Aces High, got questions
« on: October 09, 2006, 01:39:04 PM »
No idea if anyone wants to reply to this or not.

I flew Fighter Ace for probably 5 years on a pretty serious level. I mainly flew German aircraft and was a member of two prominent squads that were very active almost daily. I quit because the game got very stale and I could no longer take the poor modeling of the German aircraft which put you at an immediate disadvantage.

How does AH compare to FA for those that have flown both?

Does AH have the padlock feature like FA has?

Does AH offer rooms that feature historic battles with a purpose for the various countries to gain ground across a map?

Is it worth my time to set up a subscription and give AH a try after spending so many years with FA?

Thanks for replies.

Buehller,

Quite a few of us came from FA, I left FA back in 01 after racking up kills at an unprecedented pace.

The GE rides in here are beasts, the flight modeling will take some getting use to though, as it is a different experience.  Padlock, yes, but i never use it :P

Yes there are earlier arenas set, and yes you should subscirbe :P

Yes, except it will not track the target when the target is behind an obstruction.

Just to be clear, Bueller, you just got a reply to your question from the game designer, the creator and Lord High Master of AH.

Cinsider that another plus....excellent customer responsiveness.

Give it a try. Its the most fun I've ever had computer gaming, and the only program that's held my interest for more than a couple months (2.5 years and counting in AH). Some players ahve been here 6-7 years.

The modeling in AH is much better.

Not in the same way that FA did.  We have the AvA arena that has historical planesets going against eachother with weekly changes in the setting, but not the free for all bit that FA had.  That wouldn't really work.  The Ki-67 carries about 1,700lbs of bombs, and it was Japan's best bomber.  Compare that to the 6,000 and 8,000 of the B-17 and B-24 or the 14,000lbs of the Lancaster....    It would not be a fair fight.

Yes, it is much better in my opinion.

Holy cow, thanks for quick replies. Does AH have something similar to TC or Territorial Combat like FA has? I am not a big fan of flying around willy nilly with no purpose to win a room. So padlock drops if the target moves behind something. Cool. Thanks a ton for the comments. I know many serious players that left FA for the same reasons I left almost 2 years ago. I wonder how many turned up at AH and are happy.

I played FA about three or four years ago for a short time.  It was fun but,  IMHO, at that time it was more "arcade" like than AH.  FA for instance, had the view (can't remember what they called it) where you couldn't see any part of your own plane.  Made for some ridicuously easy deflection shots and 100% visibility on your enemy since there wasn't a nose or canopy bow getting in the way.  AH is superior.

Some guys spend vast majority of their time furballing, some guys spend vast majority of their time in tank battles, some guys spend vast majority of their time capturing territory.....I think the base-capture part/winning the war provides a context in which to blow each others' brains out:aok  (The rest of us just hang out in here)

P.S. download the game (free), play it offline for a bit untill you learn controls, flight model, etc-- make the most of your 2 week freebie---even if ya haven't decided by then, the 8 man rooms are ALWAYS free

Once you use the Aces High View System ... you won't want to use padlock.

Aces High has the best and most fluent viewing system that I have ever used.

Bueller67 , your gonna enjoy this , trust me I played both .

But it's quite a bit differant than your used to atm . Give it alot of time matie . The learning curve is gonna be there for a bit . Useing hat views v paddock for one . The flight model another , this is lots better imo but it's alot differant than your used to atm also . Also don't bother shooting till it shows 200d or mostly it's just a waste of ammo . Some shots are ok out to 600d but they gonna have to be lvl and straight to hit and you won't be doing that in any German ride , need 50's :)

The bb board here is a mine just full of treasure on the game . Just use the search function .

Hope you enjoy this as much as I have , the learning for me is still going on yet  hehe .

cu up
spro

Edit : The MA is Territorial Combat , this game has the same flight model in ALL ROOMS unlike FA unless that has changed which I doubt .

Thanks for all the quick replies. I think I'll have to dust off the old MS stick and give this a try. I assume squads in AH use things like team sound or similar communication software to talk to each other?
