Parole Denied for Lennon murderer, again

I remember it clearly, December 8th 1980.  I was watching TV in the living room when the breaking news came on saying "Ex Beatle John Lennon has just been shot outside the Dakota apartment building where he lives.  There is no word as to his condition".......of course I came to find out that by the time we had heard that news Lennon was already dead.

Lennon would have been 66 years old Yesterday (bd: Oct 9, 1940) had he not been murdered by a side show freak that to this day robs the entire planet of oxygen with every breath of homicidal lunacy.  chapman thinks he should be paroled.  Next hearing is in October of 2008.  If chapman ever gets out I wonder who will go down in history as the one to finally provide justice to humanity by putting that freak down for good.

Let him serve out the entirety of his sentence....but please don't pretend that he is somehow worse than other murderers because he killed a famous, or infamous, celebrity.


Lennon was a musician, an entertainer, and a man who disdained conventional mores and was one of the founding fathers of the free-sex movement and the modern drug culture, which have spawned innumerable problems.  He didn't deserve to die...but he was no saint.

His murderer deserves no more, and no less, punishment than the murderer of any other ordinary citizen.  If he's earned it, he should get the same consideration for parole as any other criminal.  If he hasn't earned it, he shouldn't get it.

Lennon changed the world. He was a true renaissance man. Chapman deserves to serve his full sentance.

yup I remember the day well,  we were enjoying some drinks with friends and had just finished rolling a fatty.  the TV was on as I was pulling the LP from the dust jacket, the marshall tucker band.  my friend robert lit the doob, I turned off the TV and frau storch said "well, I guess someone didn't like his new album"  we all laughed and enjoyed the mashall tucker band along with some very high quality colombian gold.  8 Dec 1980.  you can probably tell there aren't too many beetles fans amonst my close friends and even fewer lennon fans.  it was still one of those moments that you remember the details of what you were doing when you heard the news.  the cheekbones needs to stay in jail until he rots just like any other who takes a life.

Intolerance?  As in the intolerance to accept that all are equal and equally deservant of their punishments?  That somehow, mental incapacitance is a get out of jail card for true punishment?

I remember the day exactly. I got home from work late and was watching Monday Night Football...All of a sudden Howard Cosell stops talking...the play continues going on, but no Howard. You know he's there somehow, but just silence. This goes on for 30 seconds or more. The game is continuing through all this...play after play. Cosell finally speaks into the mike and you can tell immediately something is really wrong. He painfully stumbles through the announement that Lennon had been shot in front of Dakota Apartment numerous times. Then silence again. The game continues. Cosell was a pro. Pro's don't act this way; You knew it was bad.

After the worst had been realized, I lit a candle and put it in the window. I stayed up all night. I will never forget the faces of people everywhere the following day.

What would be an appropriate penalty if he'd shot Yoko instead?

I believe the appropriate penalty should be a life for a life.  not necessarily end the murderer's life but to allow him to simmer in jail all the rest of his days.  I used to be an advocate of capital punishment but have come to conclude that it is far more fitting a punishment to allow the murderer to live in a cage solitarily with minimal contact with other people throughout the course of his natural life.  he's existing but he is not really living. I believe I would prefer death to that type of existence.  and yes, even if it was yoko ono that had been killed.
