Good science fiction is always about the human condition, and usually a subset of drama.  SciFi isn't about space ships, it's about finding a level of metaphor to use to talk about humanity that will disarm the viewer from their usual preconceived notions.  BSG is a perfect example of this.

Some of the worst examples of science fiction have been the ones with the most special effects.

Not every story in this genre can begin with "A fleet of Zorgon ships roared through space, their positron drives screaming into the ultraviolet as they powered up their hyperspace generators" or "With a massive blast, the Ultra-Cannon began firing into the spinning thought-vortex below, its planet-sized projectiles twisting the very fabric of space as they ripped downwards at just below the speed of light".

The best stuff revolves around situations that the reader/viewer could empathize with.

EDIT: But I still like the big super mega fx scenes, don't get me wrong.  It's a condiment, though, not the whole meal.

Then you gotta watch this last episode.  There's one spaceship scene where both my wife and I said 'holy crap' at the same time.  It's the 'turbulence' one I mentioned above.

I agree that good sci-fi is not about "spaceships" and that human drama is an essential part. We differ on the purpose of good sci-fi though. I prefer mine to include new ideas which spark the imagination rather than being metaphors which may or may not give us a different perspective on our condition. Good sci-fi lives in books and rarely in movies or tv shows.

Yep, good episode.  The "turbulance" scene was especially good, and really took me by surprise.  That kind of "thinking outside the box" maneuver was simply cool.  And if my arithmetic is correct, I think Lee's basestar score is now at least one ahead of Papa Adama's.  One more and I think he's and ace (but where will he paint his kills?).

Basestar Ace: That'd be a hell of an accomplishment.  Of course, we don't know whether or not Adama scored any 40 years back during the first conflict.

Of course, it might be one of those tactics vs. strategy situations.  A short term tactic of "Kill the basestars" would be secondary to a long term strategy of "save the human race", for example.

One thing that kinda seemed odd to me was why Pegasus didn't jump out of the battle after Galactica was safe. You know...now you see me, now you don't. Of course I don't know all the details of TFL, but Galctica was able to make multiple jumps pretty quick. But then we would'nt have seen the the following of the original storyline.

That's a major selling point for me with BSG, they always manage to work in details true to the original storyline.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

I coulda sworn I heard someone on the Pegasus bridge announce that they had lost FTL.  If that happened, and you had a skeleton crew, there'd be no way to get it up and running again.  I guess part of being a captain is knowing when to abandon ship.

Speculation, of course, I may be confusing the "we lost the FTL" comment on Galactica just before that with an imagined event on the Pegasus.

The only thing missing, really, was Lloyd Bridges in the captains chair during the collision.

I know Galactica lost it at one point, I'm trying to remember if Pegasus did as well.

They had a one way ticket from the beginning. Lee knew that Galactica wouldn't be able to pull it off alone and the transports wouldn't make it either (Galatica wouldn't been able to hold the basestars long enough).

I download them as they come up... they're always up in HDTV quality, and usually fast torrents. Plus, they don't start airing the season til like January in Canada. I'm not even sure when it's on TV here, really.
