Soda's Aircraft Evaluation page says.....

Soda's Aircraft Evaluation page says or seems to say that it is better to exchange 4 x .303 for 2 x .50 calibre machine guns on the Spit ix  but I cannot find this option available anywhere on the Mark ix ?

Does anyone know how to do this and can anyone tell me if there are any significant differences between the Mark ix and mark xvi in AH. It looks from the picture when setting the guns as though the xvi  is "cropped" (the wing ends cut off for higher speed at altiude in which case what effect does this have on performance in general?

I don't fly spits much at all but I think that was for the old mk IX.

There are others better versed on the spits like Kev, but the cropping helped in the roll rate to match up better vs the 190s.

Hope I am not too far off ;)

The SMk16 got introduced with the remoddeling of the Spitfire series, version 2.06 in November 2005. Read about the planes introduced and the changes made here. With this version, the MG loadouts on the Spitfires were changed as well.

There are no .50 cals for the Spit 9 anymore.  That was before the new models were introduced.  Now you have to go to the Spit 14 or 16 to get the .50's but the basic information was correct.  If you have the opportunity the 2 .50 cals are MUCH more lethal than the 4 .303's.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I wish so too, but it's not gonna happen. it's already a great resource, you just have to keep in mind that some of the information is outdated.

Spit IX no longer has the option of .50 cals, and spit XVI, although it has cropped wings, is a beast.

The differences between the MkIX and the MkXVI is the wings and the gun loadout.

The wing: The spit16 is faster and quicker than the spit9. The spit9 will out turn, climb and holds energy better than the spit16. It's very easy to rip a half of a wing off of a spit16. The spit9 will usually loose the whole wing.

The guns: I fly the MkIX. I use the .303 as an attention getter. I've got the convergance for the .303 set out to the max and I'll usually use those guns to make my opponent turn. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I use the 20mm guns at close range to kill.

"Faster and Quicker" does that mean higher top speed and better accelaeration?

Why specifically do you prefer the ix to the 16? You have probably already explained but I think I need you to spell it out if you dont mind.

Apparently, I was wrong about the spit9 outclimbing the spit16.

I'm sorry, yes, the spit16 has a higher top speed and better accelaeration.

I'm a turn pilot, but I also want to get to my destination sometime before retirement. The spit9 gives me both the speed and manuverability I want. I also fly the A6M5B, but only off of the carrier and in defense, even though the seafire is a perfectly acceptable spitfire.

Plus, in the late war, the spit9 has an ENY of 20. My plane doesn't get grounded often. And if I shoot down some planes with a lower ENY (ie-spit16 or la-7 or any of the other "better" planes), I get lots and lots of perk points if I can land.

Just a heads up, I spent a couple of hours this weekend getting my butt shot off by Schatzi. I was stupid enough to try turn fighting with a hurricane mkIIc. She pointed out to me that I needed to keep my "e" up against her, which lead me to keeping her occupied until someone else shot her down... ;) She's good. I would listen to her when she talks.
