Am going to Hawaii in January, 9 days, but darn, it is a work trip meaning all expenses paid.   :)

Where you stayin Dago?  You'll be here just in time for the new Aviation museum.  :)  Let me know if you have time, I can get tickets.  Might even spring for beer after.  :)

Wow...Hawaii is paradise.  If I get WOFT there is a very good chance I will attempt to station in Hawaii...Glad you had a great trip!

I was taking a picture of this one when I turned right and saw it diving down.

Dont remember the hotel name, just made the reservations yesterday through a company reservations program.  It is on the beach at Waikaki (sp?).  One of the two guys going with me has been there alot and we picked the place together.  We will all be bringing our wives, so wanted a good place.

There is a chance I might have to cancel and hand the trip off to someone else, my son is redeploying to Afghanistand in middle Jan and we might need to go see him at that time, depends on when his wife delivers our first grandson. (due  late December)

Thanks for the offer, will let you know if we come.

Thanks, will do.  

Sad thing is, this is his 4th combat deployment, and he is being "stop loss"  held in.  His enlistment ends in January, he will deploy with his first child being 3 weeks old.   He is taken it matter-of-factly, I guess he appreciates he will be able to be there for the birth, and that is something not all soldiers get to experience.

I think he might have reenlisted anyway.

Mightyboy do you have any tips for taking underwater pics?

I am leaving for St. Lucia and St. Thomas on Dec 1st and will be using my new Canon Sd700is with the underwater housing Canon makes for it. Last year in Jamaica I tried using one of those disposable underwater cameras and was very disappointed.

The camera has an underwater mode and the housing has a diffuser, should I just use those or do you have any tips you could share?

Does the housing come with color-corrected lens? That was something mine did not have so I bought the wide angle and 3x closeup lens. Most of the pictures I take are with the wide angle lens that is color-corrected.

Without color-correction you tend to get a lot of green in the picture and not all of the other colors.

I also learned not to chase things. It never fails that if I try to chase a fish it will run away but if I just sorta float to it it will stick around.

If you have a digital camera take lots of pictures. I take hundreds of pictures but only have a 1/3 of them that actually come out right.

I also take blind pictures....If I see a hole that I cannot see in but my camera will fit I will stick the camera in a take a picture anyway. I have gotten some real good shots that way.

I went to St Thomas last year and had a blast doing shore dives at Coki Beach. Lots of fish and it's not to deep so you can dive forever on a tank. Plus the tanks are right on the beach so you don't carry them far.

The housing does not have a color corrected lens but I believe that the underwater setting on the camera does the color correction, not sure. It's digital and with the 4GB card the read-out shows 1800 pics available so I'll be snapping a lot. Do you find that the flash scares the fish away?

Sounds like a good camera.

I don't think the flash bothers them to much. I've taken up to 10 pictures of the same fish without it moving to much.

One thing I forgot to mention was that you want to be sure to have your camera close to the temp of the water before you get in. Most dive boats will have a bucket of water you can put the camera in while you head out to the dive site. If the camera is in a cold room and then you go out in warmer water the lens may fog up on you and you will have to wait for it to clear before you can take any pictures.

Be sure to have some type of moisture munchers. They really help with condensation and any small amounts of water that seep in to the housing.

I normally keep a fresh set in my housing even when I have it stored away.

I also make sure I have plenty of 2500mAH(or higher) rechargeable batteries with me so I can change them after each dive. I've never HAD to change them but I do anyway.
