Good show, kinda drawn out, but I feel that way about most history/discovery shows.

And yes, the networked computers rendering is the way almost every high end computer generated animations are being done (Rendering farms is what most of us call them).  Pretty amazing stuff.  And with bandwidth getting cheaper these farms are actually working together to form super-farms.  I'm pretty sure I've read recently about how pixar used this to render Shrek and other 3d animated films.

BOTH of which were in service already (1942 for the 38, Feb 43 for the Corsair)? The tactic of diving out against the Zero was also developed in 1942, by the F4Fs (which this program suggested couldn't dive out on the A6M).

Also, wasn't the current model of Zeke the A6M5 at the time?

I swear, it seems lately like the History Channel has done most of its research on Wikipedia. :p

The 38s didnt outclass the Zekes like the Hellcat did.  They held their own, but didnt destroy as many planes in such a time period that the Hellcat did.  Dont forget, early 38s had severe problems.  As did the early Corsairs.  The F4U-1C/D were the first corsairs able to land on a carrier.  The earlier models werent suited for carrier ops.  Thats why the Marines used them and not the Navy, hench "Black Sheep Squadron"

The A6M2 was the numberous type during 43-44, the 5 came in midd 44-45 i believe.  But i could be wrong!

The teething problems of the F4U weren't related to flight performance and pure combat capability. The F4U-1 outmatched the Zeke BEFORE the carrier-suitability issues were resolved.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Gotta keep something in mind.  The early 38s did just fine. The number of 38s available to the 5th AF was never very great as they were going to the ETO and MTO.  Then they ran out of targets.

As an example.  The last 80th Headhunter kill of the war was December 30, 1944.  Almost 9 months left of the war, but nothing to shoot at.

475th FG, made up of 3 P38 squadrons had their last kill on December 6, 1944.  Again, 9 months to go without any targets.

The 5th and 13th AF 38s ended up flying ground attack because they were not being opposed in the air.

Not bashing the Hellcat, but it did much of it's damage after those Marine and Navy Corsair and Wildcat pilots had taken on the best of the Japanese pilots along with the P38 and P40 pilots of the USAAF.

I agree with Dan, I am a fan of the hellcat, bigtime, but most of what I read about the majority of kills, was much slower dive bombers, bombers, and out of date aircraft.
