In what appeared to be a Slug-Fest, the Axis and Allies fought a knock down, drag out brawl over the Pacific South of Japan.
The Japanese were tasked in destroying as many of the Allied CVs and support vessels as possible. The Allies massed over the CV's and screened
the fleets trying to get a glimpse of the attackers before they could get in and sink any ships.
As a pilot in the 412th we split up and searched our areas straining our eyes to see anything. Acting as forward observers, our mission was to relay any sightings and vector in interceptors to the enemy bombers.
For nearly 45 minutes we searched, seeing a lone scout it was quickly dispatched. And when some of the CV's started flashing we quickly headed to the calls of enemy aircraft. When our section noticed that the Western most CV's started flashing, our fuel situation forced us to turn back and investigate these warnings.
Approaching CV81, and down to 50% fuel our section of three mustangs
found one of the enemy strike groups, seemingly unescorted. And although I was forced to bail out from damage. They made quick work of the Kate Bombers and most likely saved the Allies from losing another CV.
