Warping like Star Trek
« on: January 15, 2007, 03:18:46 PM »
Ever since getting a new pc last week, I'm warping all over every time I play.

AMD 64X2 5000+
2 Gigs Ram
GeForce 7600
Cable internet

I've downloaded the 2 patches from the Hardware forums pertaining to AMD dual processors, but I'm still all over the place.  I even got a new cable modem and no difference.  It's weird, even when I have my settings at a cutoff of 60 fps, I still get 126ish fps and everything is moving real slow.  Then I slingshot into overdrive and start warping all over the place.  It's so bad, I can't even come close to engaging a con.  Help!

Anymore info that might be needed, let me know.  Thx in advance.

Yep, sure did.  I've even tried it in Windows 98 emulation mode.  I play 3 other online games and this is the only one I'm having trouble with, so it's not my connection.  I downloaded both the patches that the sticky refers to.  The strange thing is, I've only experienced the spinning clipboard once, but that was AFTER I downloaded the patches.  Only happened once.  I'm running hi-res graphics with sliders all the way on detail and am maxing out fps.  My refresh rate is 75 Htz.   That's why I don't understand why I keep zooming up to 120-130 fps, and it's like everything starts moving in slo-mo, then fps goes back down to 75 and it's warp city baby!  This sux.  I went from a 1.5 Ghz P4 to a 2.8 Ghz AMD & now I can't play the game, which is the main reason I bought a new pc in the first place.  I know all about turning off background processes(I use FS Autostart).  So I don't know what the deal is. Very, very frustrating.

I hope so.  I just tested it again for the 1st time today.  Still the same.  I got a film of it now.  If my kids let me have some free time, I'll make a .wmv out of it for viewing.  Even with the film playing at 150%, it still looks in slo-mo.  It's weird.  I can be all alone out to sea getting 74 fps, then all of a sudden for no reason, I shoot up to 120-130 fps(but looks slo-mo).  Then I start warping all over the place.  Then I return to 75 fps for a few seconds, then rinse & repeat.  With my new cable modem, my connection is better than ever. Really stumped here.

Is this happening both online and offline? If only online run a ping plot to see whats going on with the network. If its offline too, then post your Dxdiag here. They need to see the first third or so to check for drivers and conflicts and things.

Also seing its a new box, check to see how many processes you have running (cntrl, alt, delete, click on the processes tab). 20-30 are what your shooting for. New boxes sometimes come with all kinds of extra junk getting in the way. Watch the CPU usage at the bottom of the processes window. With nothing running, from your desktop you should see it only go up a couple percent.

Well its a couple of things to check.

I've found that machines coming straight out of the box are usually not tuned for gaming.

hit the msconfig and start up, shut down all the worthless stuff that auto loads into the background.

Then, run spyware on it.  Yes, I know, New and all, but I get spyware just going through the Install process of windows lol

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

How do I run a ping plot? Never had to do it before.  If it was my connection, wouldn't all my games have probs., not just AHII?

Tested it offline.  No warping, but a new problem.  All of the icons looked like they were vibrating and the + and - beside the distance number kept going back and forth about 10 times per second, like +-+-+-+- back and forth real fast, even tho I was closing in.  Good grief, why do I always seem to have the crazy problems?  I run 2 different spyware programs everyday before gaming.  Nothing there.  I have 30 processes running, with 5 being my firewall & antivirus.  These are the same fw & av I had on my last pc, with the exact same settings, so I don't think the problem is there.  Only AHII is giving me problems.:cry

Downgrade the driver for your Nvidia... the 9x.xx series is causing all kinds of havoc with the lower cards. I have a 7600GT as well (PCIe) and run it on the 84.66 driver version.

Then, to test if it still might be the Dual Core issue, right click the aceshigh.exe file in your game install, select Properties and put it on Win98-compatibility mode. That will force it to run single core.... if the problem is gone then, youll have to relook into the Dual core patch stuff.

I cannot see it in your dxdiag (you cut that part off), but check your hardware accelleration level in the sounds tab. While this has probably nothing to do with your current issues, it needs to be set to STANDARD, not FULL.

I have to agree with it being the driver. I upgraded drivers and had the exact same icon problem you describe. Rolled them back and problem gone.

Also, I installed another hard drive and operating system to use for games only. I boot to that drive when I play AH and only have 16 processes running. AH is smooth as silk and high frame rates at all times.

Seing as how it's an HP system I'll bet you have over 30, probably closer to 50 processes running after boot. Trim them down.
Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

OK Ranger. Im on my second coffee and afraid ill need a little clarification :). Sorry.

When you go into OFFLINE mode, you obviously do not have a warping issue... but you get the "vibrations" things, correct?

When you go ONLINE, you have lag/warp problems, but do not get the "vibrations"?

Did the 98 comp mode or driver downgrade fix the "vibrations" in OFFLINE and is your only problem the warps now? If yes, I wouldnt worry too much about it for the time being. There have been loads of problems and complaints with connection woes in the last week. Some of it has to do with the server memory issues Skuzzy mentioned.

A PS: on your pingplot. The one you pinged is the BBS server, not the game server. To trace down arena issues, you need to ping 206.16.60.39 for any of the main arenas and 206.16.60.38 for all other arenas.

I'll try changing drivers.  The 98 comp mode did not fix the vibrations offline, or the warping online.  I took it down from hires to 512 textures, but that didn't help either.  Thx for the help so far.  I'll keep ya updated.
