upgrade from AMD64 3400 to Dual Core Opteron 170 on a ASUS A8V
« on: January 25, 2007, 02:25:54 PM »
when I upgrade the cpu, will I need to re-install XP professional?
I have read articles which state both yes and no..

I need to flash my BIOS to the latest rev, was hoping that I did not need to re-install the OS. THe sata drives are setup as raid if that is a factor

prob not, especially if you have a relatively recent bios already.

Read the X2 sticky.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

1) backed up the important stuff and recorded all my BIOS settings
2) flashed my bios to the latest
3) opened the case and wrestled the Thermalright XP-120 off and popped out the 3400.
4) dropped in the opteron 170 and re-installed the XP=120 and its fan.
5) fired up the computer and went into the bios and reset the settings back to what i had.
6) when XP opened, it detected new processor and installed something and had me reboot
7) after reboot I was able to see both cores in device manager.
8) installed the two parches listed in the sticky(reboot for each).
9) went into AH video settings and set resolution to 1920 x 1200 with 1024 max textures
10) started AH and set detail sliders to max

so far so good :)
