Kill steal?
« on: January 31, 2007, 01:55:51 AM »
Hello everyone, I have a quick question.  The other day I was accused of kill stealing.  But I want a second opinion because I didn't purposly go out of my way to take another pilots kill.

The senario was there were two (2) sets of Lancs coming into a base.  I was in a P47 and dove down into the first set.  I shot one Lanc down but ended up flying into the second set of Lancs.  The gunners chewed up my engine and it seized.  I was close to my base with some good alt so I decided to glide in.  As I was working my way to land, one of the Lancs in the first set flew over me.  The left engine was on fire, the pilot was still going for the base, and the tail gunner was starting to shoot at me.  The distance was about 200-300 yds.  I opened up and shot the Lanc down.  I did manage to land after that.  That was when I was accused of kill stealing.

So thats the story.  Any opinions or thoughts?

Thanks,
Obie:aok

Sorry, I should have posted this under general discussions.

Ignore. Usually you dont need to shoot at burning plane, but "burning" not always equal "killed".

If theyre on fire and running away, I let em go. If they are on fire and still fighting, fair game.

Obie,

as the others said. Burning planes are usually "dead", but depending on the situation still able to hurt. If they are still fighting/attacking, ill shoot them.

With a dead engine at 300 yards from a gunning bomber.... let him shoot you next time, that way your countryman wouldnt have lost his Lanc kill.

First off IMO incoming bombers don't really apply to the whole kill stealing idea.
I mean its not like you dogfighting him down from 10k to the deck only to have someone else come along and steal your work is it.I mean after all the idea is to get them before they knock you out.  So teamwork is a plus right?

Second people are often shot down trying to kill formations. So it makes sense to have backups in case you don't get them all.

Last, NOTHING works as well as teamwork tatics on bombers. Two guys attacking from opposite angles at the same time, well one of you is going to get through without a ping right? The other can duck, dodge, & peel off, or attack a diff drone. So again, good teamwork yes, kill stealing, well not in my book.

If somebody is crying about one Lanc kill then that's kinda sad. I have outflown many a plane gotten it nice and slow only to have it picked from above by someone(partly because I am a horrible shot) I have never once whined, I just need to finish off my target quicker. And If I ever shoot a mossie or zeke and make it burn and I don't finish it....somebody better because they burn for days and are still able to cause problems(that's just my opinion though)

Yep,

If a flaming bombers is still on bomb run...KILL IT!

If it is no longer a threat I'll bite my lip and leave it alone....But who really cares unless bombers is all they can kill! :o

Then by all means shoot back. As mentioned buffs dont count. Truthfully I shoot at ANY engaged fighter....burning, smoking, dinged up....I dont care if its actively engaged then I assume the guns still work just fine.

Now swooping down to pick a flamer is poor form....but happens all the time. I'm pretty aware of who the habitual pickers are...I swoop em all the time if the chance arises....otherwise I leave all deadstick/flamers alone unless we're over there "side" and a ditch is likely....then it depends on circumstance....giving up alt or E for any cripple is largely a bad idea.....

As far as "my" kills go, I figure taht if it was still flying, it wasn't *DEAD* yet. That makes it fair game.

The only thing I consider TRUE kill stealing is when the plane is in pieces, like the tail is off and it's flying backwards, and the stealer lines up and pings away at the obviously dead fuselage.  There's no reason to do that EXCEPT to steal....

Burning only means its GOING to be dead. It's <....cue Monty Python voice> not dead yet!!  And after all, the guy who SETS it on fire is only the one who pushed the hit box over the threashold, not necessarily the one who's done the most damage.

No kill "belongs" to anyone, and there's no such thing as "dibs" or "I saw it first." If its red, and its flying, shoot it.

Buff or Fighter ... if it is on fire and still flying aggressively ... I will rip it apart without even blinking.

Been burned a couple of times letting one of those guys fly away waiting for it to self-destruct.

Personally I don't consider a burning plane dead.  I've personally landed burning panes so I know they aren't dead yet.

So IMO if someone let's a burning plane run off, if I'm in range I'll kill it. IMO they should have finished it off if they expected to get the kill.

Bombers IMO if it's anywhere close to a base there is no kill stealing unless it's already falling in pieces. Anything other than that with a bomber is fair game IMO. Saving your base is top priority not kills.

Fair game.  Don't worry 'bout some sco-ho feeling indignant.  Lot's of highly competitive solo pilots in the game.  Not worth the concern.

A bomber still on the bomb run is fair game in my book.  Until he is spinning or blown up, he can still get his eggs away, which may just take out your FH's, VH's, or whatever you need just then to defend.  It's stil a threat.

A bomber middle of no where.... let him burn.  No threat.

A Zero on fire..... kill it..... those things can burn forever and claim a few more kills.   If *YOU* set a plane on fire, it's *YOUR* responsibility to stay with it to make sure it doesn't kill any team mates, if you want the kill..... if you leave it to go kill something else..... fair game if it is still a threat to someone else.

All depends on the threat situation.

I've shot up many a plane, only to have someone else get the kill.

I've blown through formations, drained my guns without popping any of them, only to be flying home minding my own business and rack up Kill messages as someone else pops them off.

Bottom line is, if They did enough damage to the plane to begin with, then the best you could hope for is an Assist.

Fly, try to be fair, but you can't cover everyones 6, give everyone check 6 calls, or be aware of every single person that may be angling for every single plane.  Enjoy the game and squelch the griefers, lifes too short.
