Interesting about Memphis Belle (The movie).  I talked to some 91st BG vets and they hated it.   Then I talked to a 301st BG vet tail gunner and he thought it was great.   He'd been shot down in February 44 and ridden his 17 in, trapped in the tail and somehow survived.

The movie was no where near the real story as they pulled in all kinds of stuff from other incidents.  The Belle was not shot up on it's last flight and only one crewman was ever wounded  and he described it as a 'pin scratch'.

The War Lover with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner is a decent B17 film along with 12 O'Clock High.

thanks guppy, me not being a war vet didnt notice the historical aspect, i just have good memories of watching it aged about 15 when i was bed ridden with a broken wrist, two broken elbows(skateboarding), snapped and pinned 5th metacarple (from a fight at school where i stupidly punched the dude on the forehead, he went down but i came off worse) and a nasty bit of difficulty when it came to whiping my arse on my own :)

i carried on skateboarding for 4 years anyhow.

i am rather ignorant of most of the films mentioned here, i must do some DVD hunting.
400 yrds on my tail, right where i want you... [/size]

In no particular order (except as I think of 'em)...

Memphis Belle -- Yeah, it's fictionalized, but as far as a depiction of the bomber raids go?

Flyboys

Midway

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Airplane! of COURSE gets a mention!

Top Gun gets a mention just for its 1980s action cheesiness. Besides, forget Maverick. We all know Goose made that movie.

I can't believe no one's said this: Star Wars Episode IV -- I mean, c'mon, Lucas BASED the dogfights on the old WWII gun cam footage

Last Starfighter -- The Death Blossom reminds me of watching those spray dweebs who clamp their fingers on the trigger as they spiral to their deaths after I've shot their tail off. :D

Anyone who says Pearl Harbor needs to be shot into the sun. That movie was just plain (no joke intended) WRONG on about every technical and historical detail you could throw at it. If Jerry Bruckheimer (I love how Firefox's built-in spell checker recommends "Weisenheimer" as an alternate spelling, ROFL) didn't still have to finish Pirates 3 I'd recommend HIM to be shot into the sun along with the Flanneled One for frelling up the Prequels and Original Trilogy.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I'd have to say Memphis Bele, mainly because I saw it when I was six and it is the reason that I have always been interested in aviation.

It started childhood dreams of being a pilot and a fascination with the war.
