tempest/typhoon

why is one worth so much more? i have trouble remebering which is which, lol, but i rather enjoy the "free" one, i beleive its the typhoon, and the tempest was, well, tempting.

i compared both in the offline, and the only differance i found was the tempest carried aprox. 80 rounds more of the 20 mm, and the ord. loadout

The tempest is the typhoon on steroids.


The tempest accelerates fast, climbs fast, has lots of bullets, 20mm guns, 4 of them , rolls great, turns on a dime during high speeds and has a great view.

I've found that the largest difference is in climb rate. Of course there are many smaller differences, such as top speed, more ammo, better dive. In 1v1 engagements assuming pilots of equal skill the tempest makes the typhie look ridiculous.

Many people seem to think of the Tempest as being just a faster Typhooon. That's usually the last error of, for example, a P51 pilot before trying to dogfight a Tempest...

Personally, I find the much improved rate of roll very handy while E fighting or BnZ.

The Tempest has almost every month the best K/D rating of all planes, a well flown Tempest is the closest thing to "untouchable" we have in game

 ...until a better flown La-7 by a pilot who knows what his doing, comes in with slight alt advantage to compensate for the slightly lacking speed and runs the Temp down within seconds. Then the 60~70 point plane will be forced into a fight which he probably won't get out of alive, by a 0 point plane that is less than 10mph slower than itself.

Thatīs why I said "closest thing to"

Also my own definition of "well flown" means not to get dragged down to the deck in a hostile environment. Even in a Tempest always a bad idea.

I think the Tempest seems to handle better in a vertical turning fight than the Typhoon does. If you fly the Typhy first then try the Tempest you WILL notice the difference.

Hehe, yes they do, but I could not care less about what air-quakers call it on Ch 200 when I refuse to flat turn with their Hurri 2Cs or A6Ms.

I do agree that a La7 comes dangerously close in some crucial performance aspects. Yet my opinion is that the perk difference is justified if you compare the "weapon systems" Tempest and La7



(BTW, the planes I do watch very closely when they do show up while flying a Tempest are the F4U-C and F4U-4)

Tempest has the Hispano Mk. V cannon, which are basically the same as the one's on the Typhoon but with a higher rate of fire.

The reason the Tempest was so much faster than the Typhoon, was that they took the fuel tanks from the wings, placed it in the fuselage (why the nose looks less stubby on the Tempest) and put laminar flow wings on it.

The Tempest II was the main development, the Tempest V was a bit of an interim while they overcame the cooling problems on the II.

The Tempest II was modified to be the prototype for the Hawker Fury (they made it smaller and lighter), which in turn became the Sea Fury.  So in essence the aircraft which is widely regarded to be the finest piston engined fighter ever can be traced all the way back to the Hawker Typhoon

While the Tempest certainly is good, I suspect that honor goes to the Me 262.

Only when the 262 stays away from buffs - one ping, engine gone.

Interestingly, the Tempest has always a better K/D than the 262.

And the 262 draws much more attention. It's easy to identify, it's position is called out on local and even countrychannel and people will go great lenghts to get that jet. While the Temp just looks like another Tiffie

But enough now - I'm starting to talk like a Tempest fanboy

Yeah, the Tempest is the acceleration king in AH2. In the real world, that seems not to be the case. At least the Brits didn't rank it very high.
