Sorry, seemed to have missed Gooss' reply. Sense I have TrackIR I guess I don't need to use the keys for looking around. It seems fine to me. But, how do I find where the action is and is the padlocking a nice way to spot planes. Just don't know how best to do this in this game. I am using the 8 player stuff for now.
Use your map to find a fight. ESC for clipboard, use INS and DEL to zoom map. Mouse out of flight mode, you can use left mouse to drag and drop the map, right click for options (like field names, alts, radar etc....). On the right click map you can also bring up things like "War Status" (not valid in 8Player), "Clipboard Maps" (8player maps, including fields and other placed objects can be customized and might not fit these strat maps) and single fields status (Im not sure that this works in 8 player... depends on Host setting i think).
Read
for more info on how to read and interpret the map.
As for default settings: with the multitude and variety of Joystick/Controllers out there, theres no way for HTC to have a default setting that fits them all more then they already have inplemented. If you plug a JS in, by default Roll and Pitch, the fire buttons and Views on hatswitch are mapped. But thats also where the similarities stop....
If youre playing the game without one of the system requirements and "complain" that you need to configure it........... try
http://www.slowcat.de for instructions on mouse setup.
As for default keymap: im still playing mostly with the defaults (except a few i had to map additionally like CM Eye mode and mode selection).
To your "E and alt" question: Like has been said before, that refers to a planes Energy state (E) and its altitude (alt), not any keys. "Co-E and co-Alt" is actually a slightly misleading expression, albeit often heard since Energy already encompasses the altitude information. Energy (E) = Speed x Altitude (alt). Two opponents starting "Co-E" is the "fair fight", provided both are in the same plane, they theoretically have the same chance of winning/loosing. Use "Energy" and "altitude" as search terms if you want to look through past threads.
If you cannot (or dont want to) pay for a subscription right now, the 8 player mode is a nice way of "getting up to speed" with game and gameplay. But be aware that many of the rooms have non-default settings, like for example higher ammo multipliers and lower fuel burn. Some even enforce stall limiter. If you plan on really learning to fight (aside from HO-and-run (shooting head on, and running after each try) and spray-and-pray (shooting huge amounts of bullets in the hopes that a stray one might hit) I recommend you try to keep to rooms with more realistic settings. This is also usually where youll find the better pilots/vets for the above reasone

.
One short note: FFA means Free For All - rooms labeled with that means that all planes (red OR green) are free to kill. Killshooter is off in those, you can fight friendlies.
Team - those rooms are meant to be team vs team fight. Usually you should look upon logging in, even the teams. Killshooter is usually on, youre meant to kill the red guys.
Generally, its best to log in and say hello and if theres no Arena Message that the host posted with some explanations/rules, I usually ask what the rules/fights are and what the purpose is.
Id suggest you check out the "Free Multiplayer" forum a little down on the Forums list. Its where the 8Player community "lives".
I hope this helped you some.

PS: Tigger, im not sure what you mean "wont find planes" in H2H. I visit there every now and then and I rarely had trouble finding a room where I could log in for a fight or two.
