I was referring to all 30 caliber rounds in general when I typed 7.62mm, I shouldn't have been so specific.

The Garand is a good example of a 30 caliber round being used very effectively in a semi-automatic weapon.

I have my doubts that any weapon without a mount can be fired effectively in fully-automatic mode.  Whether its 7.62mm in the M-14, or 5.56mm in the M-16, I've never heard anything positive about fully automatic fire, unless its from a bipoded/tripoded/mounted machine gun.

Is it true that an M14 is an automatic garand that has been modified to use a magazine rather than a clip?

Not quite. While there is a great degree of similarity they aren't the same weapon or even receiver. The M14 was set up for the 7.62 Nato round as well and not the 06. The M14 does have a magazine ammo setup vs the clip like the Garand.

Actually the M14 WAS derived from the M1 Garrand. The operating priciple is the same in both weapons along with the same basic receiver. The trigger group was modified to allow for full auto firing and it was re-chambered from the 30-06 of the M1 to the .308 / 7.62mm NATO for the M14. The internal magazine of the M1 was removed and replaced with an external removable 20rd box magazine on the M14. Many parts are interchangable between both weapons.

I find the .308 the best overall round for shooting at anything under 500 yards, unless it's in thick woods then I prefer a 30-30.  Anything beyond 500 yards the 300 Winchester Magnum is the bomb.  Never fired a .50 so I can't say anything about that.

The SOCOMS just don't appeal to me that much.  The M1A in a SAGE stock is pretty cool looking, but the SAGE stock actually sucks as a combat stock.
