Video card gamma correction problem
« on: July 07, 2000, 03:57:00 PM »
Hi there.
I am getting tired of this. I am stuck with a Creative Labs Voodoo Banshee 16mb 3d Card. There is no way I can change it for a TnT2 or a simple TnT because my motherboard doesnt allow them.A possible solution is a V5500 PCI card, but right now money is not available, so I need a temporal solution for my problem.

I have latest drivers downloaded, and my screen gets VERY dark each time I run a program. No matter my desktop gamma settings, as each time I start a program it goes darker that night (well not SO dark but very dark anyway).

Right now in AH i cant see a Zero or a Niki against the ground, and I need to aim using the icons. of course, my aim sucks anyway but right now if the plane is against the ground and is not a P51 or P47 I simply cant see it.
And when it gets dark is a nightmare.

I have LATEST patch downloaded for my card. I have even tried patches for other companies' cards, but the best results are a crashing system. I set the D3D gamma settings at its top (1.7), no use, I set it ats it lowest level (0.3), NO USE. Same with glide gamma settings. I am stuck with the current gamma level (dont know it but for sure is VERY LOW).

PLEASE this is a nightmare. Help me if you can, because this is crap, and I cant fly well this way.

Thank you very much in advance.

P.S. I have a generic PnP monitor.

RAM..

I had a bashee card, great little unit. It comes with a utility to adjust Gamma setting. Use it. Also,ya may have to up the brightness on the monitor too. I had to do this with WB because every thing was to dark!

Here's a must have program, EVERYONE should grab this. It creates a color profile for your monitor. It's from the makers of colorific(sp), graphic artist should recognize the name.  http://www.ecolor.com/tsc/fieldtest/invitation.html

It's free and they will send you the full finished version and the latest version of colorific when you answer a few questions after the install.

The color profile adjusts the reds, blues, greens and gamma of your monitor. The first tests adjusts those for the net but, if you look in your video settings, there is an extra panel that makes the adjustments for games.

Hallo
Well you probably have tried this but use the newest 3dfx banshee drivers
Ver. 1.04.00
Released Feb 9, 2000
I have tried AH on my PCI Banshee but I did not have any problems with dark colours with the reference drivers .I know older drivers have this dark colour problem from back then when I still played on  my Banshee. You are probably using the original Creative drivers ,but because this card is old I doubt that they  update there drivers anymore

Hi all
Thanks for tips. I already had early versions of Colorific and 3deep,they came in the banshee drivers disk. Before installing new version they had no effect. Now I downloaded and installed 3deep but downloaded and not installed Colorific,as I cant install it properly (lost the reference card a long time ago so I have no ID password).

Now that I installed 3deep ,all the programs look much better...all but Aces high. When I start it seems that resets all my color settings and I have to "reload" them by clicking on properties/3deep/set game gamma. Then my previous color settings are retaken, but If I try to start AH again they are resetted.

I keep seeing AH way too dark ,and this problem now ONLY happens with it!

any hint?

BTW 112233, I have both Creative's latest drivers and the reference drivers you say. I tested both for no effect at all, and I have creative's as they seem to have more control on settings than reference's.

Ram you might try picking up a voodo3 card. You can get them in AGP or PCI so it wont matter if you dont have an open AGP port.I used the voodo3 PCI in a PII 333 and had good results. The voodo seems to give better frame rates, and the NVIDIA better color.I am now useing a Dell 700 and Geforce prophet. I removed the 32 MB NVIDIA that came with it because it was not as good as the voodo3. The voodo was giveing me frame rates in the 30's. With the new geforce cards on the market you should be able to pick up a voodo3 real cheap.

Is a good idea, and as I said I am thinking in getting a new video card...but right now there is not enough money for it. I am already saving the few money I can get to pay AH and buy the new card...but right now I need some solution.

Thanks anyway

You might try powerstrip also. It has a bunch of settings for video cards/monitors(gamma,color,ect). It also can detect your monitor type and add addional adjustments and refresh rates.

Hi again...downloaded powerstrip...is a VERY nice program...but I have just the same problem with it.

It changes settings, yes, in Desktop and in all the programs...but AH. No matter the settings I put in it,  (In all options, D3D and openGLide too), AH runs with its "own" gamma correction. I can put the settings as bright as possible, or as dark as possible...AH still runs in same settings.

This is driving me nuts...Pyro can you tell me why is this happening?...I've tried reinstalling AH but for no results.

Thanks in advance.

(BTW I know that TNT are in PCI too, but I wont buy a TNT1, if I spend my money I'll do it in a powerful video card, dont want to change it again next year...and a TnT2 here in spain is still too expensive for my current money)

I dunno much about Banshee, but the Voodoo2 had a bat file in the windows folder that had gamma settings, see if your Banshee has one, then if it does just try copying the gamma settings and pasting them to your AH video.cfg file in the AH\Settings folder, MAYBE this will help, I dunno, never tried it but..............what ya got to lose?
